A student finishes 12th in Noida in April. By June, there are three nursing brochures on the family table, each quoting a different duration, and nobody can say which course is actually right. That confusion is normal. Most of it comes down to ANM versus GNM.
What each course really is
ANM stands for Auxiliary Nurse Midwife. The ANM nursing course usually runs for two years, and graduates often end up in community health work, like village sub-centres and immunization drives. GNM is General Nursing and Midwifery, about three years in most places, and it trains you for hospital wards.
Which one suits you
Think about where you want to stand at 3 a.m. Beside a hospital bed? Then the GNM nursing course fits better. Out in a community, closer to home, working with families? Then look at the ANM course. It’s also the shorter route, and plenty of students keep studying afterwards, so a GNM course in Delhi can still come later if you want it.
Most colleges ask for a 12th pass with English and around 40%. Cutoffs differ, so read the notice before you pay any form fee.
Picking a college
Skip the glossy building. Ask how many hospital or community postings each student gets, and check Indian Nursing Council approval along with the state council’s recognition.
