A strong thesis research question goes beyond sounding academic. It identifies a genuine research gap, has clear scope, and gives postgraduate students a realistic path towards an original contribution.
There is a particular moment in postgraduate research when an idea that seemed brilliant starts to look much less convincing on paper. You may have read dozens of papers, found a subject you genuinely care about and even written a question that sounds suitably academic. Then someone asks, “But what exactly are you trying to find out?” and suddenly the weakness becomes obvious.
That does not mean the idea is bad. More often, the question has not been narrowed enough to become researchable.
For Masters-by-research, MRes and PhD students, this is one of the most important parts of developing a thesis. A good research question gives the project direction, but it also leaves enough room for discovery. The aim is not to make the question sound complicated. It is to make sure there is something worthwhile, original and realistically possible to investigate.
1. Understanding What Makes a Postgraduate Question Different
A thesis question is not simply an essay question with more academic vocabulary added to it.
Suppose an undergraduate essay asks, “How has social media changed political communication?” You could answer that by comparing existing research, evaluating arguments and building a reasoned discussion from published evidence.
A thesis needs another layer. You have to identify something that existing research has not fully settled.
Perhaps researchers have reached conflicting conclusions. Perhaps most studies have focused on one country while another context has received little attention. Perhaps a widely used theory explains part of a phenomenon but leaves an important question unanswered.
That difference becomes particularly important at postgraduate level.
An MRes or Masters-by-research project normally needs a focused and credible contribution that can be completed within the programme’s limits. A PhD generally requires a more substantial original contribution, although what counts as sufficient originality varies between disciplines and institutions.
So don’t judge the quality of your question by how grand it sounds. A tightly defined question can produce a much stronger thesis than an enormous one that tries to explain everything.
2. Where Research Questions Usually Go Wrong
One of the first problems is choosing a topic instead of a research problem.
“Artificial intelligence and university education” is a topic. It could lead towards assessment, student learning, academic integrity, teaching practice, employability or dozens of other areas. Until you decide what is actually uncertain, there is no clear investigation.
Then there is the opposite problem: trying to fit an entire field into one project.
Imagine a researcher wants to study how artificial intelligence affects international students’ academic writing, confidence, assessment performance, employability and relationships with lecturers across several universities.
It sounds ambitious. It is also likely to become unmanageable.
There is another misconception worth catching early: original does not mean completely untouched.
A student may discover that researchers have already studied their chosen subject and assume they need to abandon it. That is not necessarily true. You might examine a different population, test an established idea in a different setting, investigate contradictory findings or use evidence that has not previously been brought together in that way.
In other words, the originality may lie in the question you ask about an existing subject, not in discovering a subject nobody has ever heard of.
3. The Three Tests Your Question Needs to Pass
A useful way to examine a potential research question is to put it through three tests: gap, contribution and feasibility.
First, identify the gap. Be careful here. Finding a paper that says “further research is needed” is not enough. Academic authors often suggest future research for many reasons.
Look underneath that statement.
What remains unclear? Where do studies disagree? Has a particular group been overlooked? Does an existing explanation fail to account for something important? Has a method been used repeatedly without answering a particular part of the problem?
That is where a genuine research opportunity can begin.
Next comes contribution. Ask what your study could add if you successfully answered the question. The answer might be new evidence, a different interpretation, a new context or a challenge to an assumption that has become widely accepted.
Finally, test feasibility.
This is the part that can be uncomfortable because an interesting idea may not survive contact with reality. You might need access to participants who are difficult to reach, a dataset that is not publicly available, specialist equipment you cannot access or considerably more time than your programme allows.
A question is not strong simply because it is intellectually exciting. You need a realistic route towards answering it.
4. What Should You Look at Before Settling on the Question?
Start paying attention to boundaries.
Take the phrase “young people”. Does that mean teenagers, university students or people under 30? If your research concerns healthcare professionals, are you studying doctors, nurses, pharmacists or a particular group within one of those professions?
Small changes in definition can completely change the research.
Your reading should help you make those decisions. Don’t simply collect papers because they contain your keywords. Look for patterns. Notice where authors disagree, which populations appear repeatedly, what limitations keep coming back and which claims seem to be supported by surprisingly little evidence.
The language people use to search for thesis-related information can also be very broad, ranging from methodology and literature reviews to phrases such as buy thesis online near me. Such searches may sit alongside completely different academic intentions, which is why the search phrase itself tells you very little about the intellectual purpose of a research project.
Methodology matters too, but it should follow the problem rather than dictate it. If you want to understand how people experience something, you need evidence capable of capturing those experiences. If you want to establish whether measurable variables are associated, your research design needs to produce evidence that can actually address that relationship.
And ask yourself one deceptively simple question: What would I be able to say at the end that I cannot confidently say now?
If you have no convincing answer, the question probably needs more development.
5. How to Turn an Interesting Idea into a Workable Question
Don’t begin by trying to write the perfect academic sentence. Start by describing the problem as though you were explaining it to a fellow student over coffee.
What have you noticed in the literature? What does not quite add up? What keeps appearing as a limitation? What assumption makes you curious?
Write that down without worrying about sounding academic.
Then make the idea smaller.
Suppose your initial thought is, “I want to research the effect of remote working on employee wellbeing.” That is still enormous. Which employees? Which form of remote working? What aspect of wellbeing? Over what period? In what type of organisation?
Perhaps your reading shows that most research has examined large technology companies, while smaller professional organisations have received far less attention. Now you have a possible direction.
The next step is to test several versions of the question. Narrow the population. Remove an unnecessary variable. Replace vague words such as “effect” or “impact” if your proposed study cannot actually establish causation.
Then imagine the work behind the question.
Can you see the literature review? Can you identify the evidence you would need? Can you explain why your proposed methodology fits? Can you complete the work within your available time?
If not, don’t treat that as failure. It is useful information. Finding a weakness in the question before the research begins is considerably better than discovering it halfway through data collection.
A supervisor can also challenge the idea at this stage. The most useful conversation is usually not “Is this a good topic?” but “What exactly is the problem here, and what would this research add?”
6. Mistakes That Can Weaken an Otherwise Good Idea
One common mistake is assuming that broader means more impressive. It usually means more difficult to control. A narrowly defined question gives you the opportunity to examine evidence properly rather than skimming across several loosely connected issues.
Another is using “there is limited research” as though it proves originality. It does not. You need to explain why that limitation matters and what your research could reasonably contribute.
Be cautious with words such as “impact”, “effect” and “influence”. They can suggest causal claims. If your design can show that two things are associated but cannot establish that one caused the other, the wording needs to reflect that distinction.
It is also easy to become attached to a method. A researcher may enjoy interviews, surveys or statistical modelling and begin shaping the question around the method. That puts the process backwards. The problem should determine what evidence you need.
Perhaps the most damaging mistake, though, is confusing complexity with depth.
A question containing several theories, populations and variables can look impressive during a proposal meeting. Later, those same elements can leave you with a literature review that never quite settles, a methodology stretched too thin and a conclusion that answers none of the original questions properly.
Sometimes the strongest academic decision is simply to remove something.
7. Bringing the Main Lessons Together
A strong thesis research question should leave you with a sense of direction rather than a sense that you have just opened ten new problems.
Start with something that genuinely puzzles you in the existing research. Find out what has already been established, where researchers disagree and what remains uncertain. Then decide whether that uncertainty is meaningful enough to investigate and realistic enough to become your project.
There is also a useful test that is easy to overlook. Imagine your question being challenged with three short questions: Why this problem? Why now? Why this approach?
You do not need dramatic answers. You need defensible ones.
If you can explain what is missing, why it matters and how your study could investigate it with the evidence available, you are moving beyond simply choosing a topic. You are beginning to design research.
And that is really what a good question does. It does not try to prove that you already know the answer. It creates enough structure to guide the work while leaving genuine space for the research to surprise you.
