The path on which planets move while orbiting the Sun or any other large celestial body is called their orbit. The Earth orbits the Sun, while the Moon revolves around the Earth in its orbit.
How does a lunar eclipse occur?
The Earth’s shadow falls in the direction opposite to the Sun. This shadow moves along with the Sun and extends up to the Moon’s orbit. When the Moon, while revolving in its orbit, aligns in a straight line with the Earth and the Sun, two conditions arise:
- New Moon (Amavasya)
- Full Moon (Purnima)
The Moon does not produce its own light; rather, it shines and illuminates the night by reflecting the Sun’s rays.
Why and When Does a Lunar Eclipse Occur?
When the Moon enters the Earth’s shadow, the Sun’s rays cannot reach it, making it disappear from view. This phenomenon is called a lunar eclipse.
Types of Lunar Eclipses:
- Total Lunar Eclipse : When the Moon is completely covered by the Earth’s shadow and appears entirely dark.
- Partial Lunar Eclipse : When only a part of the Moon enters the Earth’s shadow, while the rest remains illuminated.
Important Points:
- A lunar eclipse always occurs on a full moon (Purnima).
- If, on a full moon day, the Moon does not align with the Earth’s shadow, an eclipse does not occur.
Thus, a lunar eclipse is a natural astronomical event that happens when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align in a straight line, causing the Earth’s shadow to cover the Moon.
