Who is Joe Hugill? Things to know about the Man Utd starlet

4

If you want to make a good impression at Manchester United, scoring four times in a 6-3 win over Liverpool is probably the best thing you can do.

This is exactly what 17-year-old forward Joe Hugill achieved when he recently showed up for United’s Under-23 team, stealing the show alongside debutant Amad Diallo, and his performance has left some fans clamoring for quick promotion to the first team.

Let’s take a closer look at Hugill.

Sunderland’s good record in recruiting young players saw them fall prey to a number of England’s top teams, and Hugill was one of the most in-demand players in the club’s recent history.

The electric performances at the youth level interested Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool, Wolves and Leeds as Tottenham fought for his signing until the very end, but United’s appeal was just too strong.

The Red Devils parted ways with just £ 300,000 to bring Hugill to Old Trafford this summer, and it already looks like a bargain.

After seeing youngster Josh Maja leave the club in January 2019, Sunderland fan fury over the loss of young players is at an all time high.

The Black Cats academy is widely recognized as one of the best in the country, but losing figures like Bali Mumba, Sam Greenwood and Luca Stephenson has hurt.

Because Hugill and fellow United signatory Logan Pye had not signed a professional contract they could be bought for pennies, and now Sunderland fans fear they’ve lost the next big thing for just £ 300,000 .

Hugill has been playing under-23 football for a long time, despite being only 17 in October.

While his natural eye for a goal helped him settle in well, academy coaches have always believed he could defend against older players due to his imposing frame.

Hugill now sits at an imposing 6’2, and while he’s not exactly the strongest build, he knows how to use his body to his advantage.

As a great prolific striker, comparisons to Tottenham striker Harry Kane have never been far behind for Hugill.

He doesn’t have an eye for a pass like we’ve seen from Kane recently, but when it comes to scoring ability it’s not hard to understand the ties; Hugill has this natural ability to score goals.

Hugill is not as slow as many forwards his size. He’s not Usain Bolt, but he’s still got enough on him to ask defenders questions.

What could be better than a four-goal course against Liverpool? Two four-goal traits against Liverpool, that’s what.

If we go back to March 2019, we’ll see Sunderland’s Under-15 team beat Liverpool 4-1 in the Floodlit Cup, and it was Hugill who stole the show.

He then scored in a 2-1 win over Manchester City in the semi-finals, before taking off against Wigan Athletic in the north final.

There’s a famous image of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer joining coaches Nicky Butt and Michael Carrick to watch United’s Under-18s in action, and that’s actually the game the boss saw Hugill playing for the first time. times.

Solskjaer watched United beat Hugill’s Sunderland in August 2019, and although the young striker was not put on the Black Cats’ scoresheet that day, he clearly did enough to convince the group that he was ready for a move.

Club scouts continued to follow Hugill for the remainder of the season, and he eventually made it to Manchester the following summer.
