The Manchester United Under-23s gave us what could be the weekend’s game on Friday as they clinched a thrilling 6-4 win over the Under-23 Blackburn Rovers – Amad Diallo performing again a star performance.
The rovers entered the game as leaders of Premier League 2, having lost just twice in 13 appearances this season, but they encountered a United side who were full of confidence after scoring six goals ahead of Liverpool on the last time.
Knowing they were going to be going through a tough game, United boss Neil Wood deployed a squad with new first-team signing Amad Diallo and 17-year-old sensation Shola Shoretire, who recently rejected advances from the best. European teams to extend his stay at Old Trafford. .
A sloppy United start gave Blackburn the lead, but an excellent solo goal from Hannibal Mejbri improved matters in the 20th minute. The Frenchman made his way past a handful of defenders before slamming home categorically.
The visitors resumed their lead soon after, but Shoretire ensured United entered the break on a level playing field. Mejbri fed Amad on the right, who cut the ball off for Shoretire to tie things up with a simple finish.
United’s top four, which also featured imposing striker Joe Hugill, continued to impress after the break but it was Blackburn who regained the lead at the penalty spot, and it looked like it was all over when the visitors went 4-2 in the 56th minute.
It was then that Amad and Shoretire went mad.
Shoretire returned home on a cross from the Ivorian in the 72nd minute, two minutes before Hugill did the same with a cross from Harvey Neville to tie things up.
Amad landed his third assist of the night four minutes later, preparing Shoretire to draw his hat-trick, before getting on the scoresheet himself with an excellent volley, sealing what was an exciting comeback.
It’s now two straight games in which United’s Under-23s have scored six goals, so it’s not hard to see why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is watching them closely.
Amad is set to fight for a place in the first team in the very near future, while Shoretire, Hugill and Mejbri have all been asked to make an impact before the end of the current season.
