UK government ‘risks’ banning gambling companies from sponsoring football shirts
Boris Johnson’s government is “likely” to back a ban on sponsorship of games of chance on football shirts in the fall, according to a report.
This could have a drastic financial impact, with the majority of Championship clubs and half of Premier League teams having a sportsbook or online casino sponsor. It is estimated that the teams in the first two divisions alone would suffer a combined turnover of £ 110million per year if the legislation were passed.
The government is increasingly concerned about gambling addiction, according to the Telegraph, with a full review of the industry underway.
While the deadline to submit evidence for this review is not until March, he is increasingly confident that the Prime Minister will pass reform when his findings are revealed. Earlier, a report by the House of Lords select committee recommended that gambling companies be banned from advertising football shirts in July.
Labor MP Carolyn Harris, who is a leading figure in the multi-stakeholder group on gambling harms, told the Telegraph she was confident the ban was in place.
“For me, it is a matter of common sense that prevails over greed, because these football clubs have other means of financing themselves,” she added.
Support for the legislation among football fans is also quite high. The questions are sparking more and more discussion on social media, while Polling by Survation recently revealed that a third of fans surveyed said they would be discouraged from buying their team’s shirt if it included sponsorship of their team. ‘a gambling company.
Clean Up Gambling Director Matt Zarb-Cousin, who commissioned the investigation, told the Guardian: “The government would have the support of football fans if it decided to oppose the gambling ads. and chance, and clubs would benefit from an increase in shirt sales. “
If the UK moved forward with the proposals, it wouldn’t be the first country to ban gambling advertising, with Italy and Spain not allowing sponsorship of shirts by gaming companies.
