Timothy Fosu-Mensah set to leave Manchester United for Bayer Leverkusen
Manchester United are reportedly set to sell marginal defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah to Bayer Leverkusen, six months before he becomes a free agent.
United triggered an option in Fosu-Mensah’s contract to prevent him from going on a free transfer last summer, but his deal is finally in place next June and he must be sold before the end of the transfer window of January to bring any kind. fees.
The Old Trafford club offered the versatile Dutchman a new contract at the end of December, more likely in an effort to preserve his market value rather than to indicate a future role in the team. But Fosu-Mensah rejected the deal, hastening his departure.
Now the Manchester Evening News reports the player is close to a deal with Bayer Leverkusen which would see the German club pay a relatively low transfer fee of £ 1.5million.
Fosu-Mensah’s personal preference is said to be a return to former club Ajax, where he played in the academy ranks between the ages of eight and 16 until his move to Manchester in 2014. But the 23-year-old accepted that it was an unlikely scenario, despite interest from Amsterdam.
Capable of playing right-back, center-back and midfield, Fosu-Mensah made his United debut at 18 through Louis van Gaal in 2016.
He offered a lot of promises and had played 21 times for the club by the time he was loaned to Crystal Palace in 2017 in hopes of helping his development by securing regular departures.
It was a hit and miss season at Selhurst Park that saw him give up more than once, while a follow-up campaign on loan at Fulham was wrecked by a long-term knee injury.
After recovering from his injury, Fosu-Mensah made his first United appearance in over three years when he made his debut against Palace in the Premier League during “Project Restart”. He has appeared in each of the last three league games of the season and has also been used in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley and twice in the delayed conclusion of the Europa League campaign.
Fosu-Mensah even started United’s Premier League opener this season in place of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who was unavailable after a summer trip to Dubai, but his only other appearances since then have been as a substitute in Champions League defeats.
United are generally keen to continue removing deadwood from the squad. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed last week that the club expect Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo each to find a new squad, while Phil Jones and Jesse Lingard remain linked with the moves.
