Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah has rejected the opportunity to sign a new contract at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old all-rounder, who plays mostly right-back but is comfortable at center, will find himself without a contract at the end of the season.

United do not have the option of automatically extending his contract, having done so in April 2020 to prevent him from leaving for free at the end of last season, but according to The Mirror United may be forced to accept his departure this this time.

The Red Devils have offered Fosu-Mensah a contract to tie him to the club until 2024, but the Dutchman has reportedly rejected the proposal over concerns over his lack of playing time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Fosu-Mensah has managed just three appearances in all competitions this season, with his only exit to the Premier League in the 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace in United’s season opener. He’s only been part of the matchday twice since.

Sky Sports News, which first reported on the offer of a new contract, does not go so far as to suggest that the offer was flatly rejected, but admits that Fosu-Mensah is considering considering all options in January while he remains frustrated with his current situation.

Marseille and Hertha BSC are both named as potential contenders for the 22-year-old, and both are willing to pay a modest transfer fee in January instead of waiting until the end of the season to nab him with a small compensation. .

News of Fosu-Mensah’s potential departure comes shortly after the Daily Mail reported that United had rekindled their interest in Max Aarons from Norwich City.

Fabrizio Romano came to substantiate the report as well, but while he admitted that United appreciated Aarons’ talent, he insisted that there was absolutely nothing concrete at the minute and that he was simply the one of the many players on the radar.

Solskjaer is eager to find a new right-back to compete with Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the near future. Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier has been suggested as an option, but the Englishman’s ten-week suspension for betting rule violations has forced United to consider other candidates.
