Thomas Tuchel flies to London to finalize contract and train at Chelsea

Thomas Tuchel is due to travel to London on Tuesday to finalize his contract with Chelsea, and he hopes to be able to lead his first training session later in the afternoon.

Chelsea made the decision to sever ties with former boss Frank Lampard on Monday amid concerns over team form and the atmosphere in the dressing room, and Tuchel was quickly introduced as his successor.

The Blues had been in talks with Tuchel since his dismissal from Paris Saint-Germain in December 2020, and according to Athletic’s David Ornstein, everything has been agreed for the German’s arrival at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

Contrary to initial reports, Tuchel has remained in Paris after leaving PSG, and is scheduled to fly over London on Tuesday, where he hopes to meet his players and conduct his first training session.

He has entered into an 18-month contract at Stamford Bridge which also includes a one-year extension clause which can be triggered either by the club or by Tuchel himself.

However, RMC Sport Mohamed Bouhafsi has maintained their previous claim of a two-and-a-half-year deal that will also have an option, so this could be one where you just have to wait and see what the club announce.

Tuchel’s initial transition to life at Chelsea shouldn’t be too problematic. He is German but speaks English fluently and is also fluent in French, but he will probably insist that everyone at the club try to speak in English.

While in Paris, he demanded that everyone speak French in an attempt to eliminate language-based locker room cliques – which won him high praise from PSG manager Leonardo.

Tuchel will have to work to bring the fractured Chelsea squad together. It is believed that the senior fringe players clashed with the rest of the squad over Lampard’s management, and that created an overall ugly atmosphere that spread across the pitch.

If all goes according to plan, Tuchel will be hoping to be on the bench on Wednesday when Chelsea host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge.
