Sergio Ramos’ contract renewal threatened as Real Madrid seek to cut payroll

Sergio Ramos has yet to agree to a new deal with Real Madrid, with the club reluctant to come up with such a lucrative deal given the strain on their finances due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Spain international is currently free to speak to other clubs with his Santiago Bernabeu contract which expires this summer, although both sides are keen to reach a deal that would see Ramos stay in the capital.

However, AS report that Los Blancos are unable to offer their captain the kind of deal they expected – which appears to be a stumbling block in negotiations – with the club reckoning he would endure 300 millions of euros. (£ 266million) deficit this year due to the ripple effect of the pandemic.

Madrid hope Ramos – and all other players looking to renew their contracts at the club – will understand the situation they find themselves in, offering reassurance that once their economic woes have subsided then they will be in a position to come up with better deals. .

While Los Blancos hope the world-class defender sets an example for the rest of the squad by signing a new contract, it remains to be seen whether Ramos will look elsewhere. At nearly 35, this is likely the last big contract of the Spaniard’s career, and it could put a strain on him in terms of moving from the club he has represented since 2005.

90 mins reported in November that all of the Premier League greats had expressed an interest in Ramos, if he officially chose to leave Madrid.

Ramos’ current deal is worth around € 13million a year (£ 11.5million), and if a deal cannot be reached, Real Madrid could be forced to seek a replacement for their captain.

Bayern Munich’s David Alaba has been offered as a potential Ramos replacement, with the Austrian himself free to speak to other clubs due to being in the final six months of his contract at the Allianz Arena.

Los Blancos are said to have made a concrete offer for the 28-year-old and hope to secure a pre-contract deal this month regardless of Ramos’ situation.
