Sergio Aguero confirms he tested positive for COVID-19

Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero has confirmed he will remain in isolation after testing positive for COVID-19.

A virus outbreak at the Etihad Stadium saw Aguero forced into self-isolation earlier in January after coming into close contact with someone who had tested positive, and he missed City’s last three Premier League games as a result .

It was hoped that Aguero would be available again for Pep Guardiola’s side in the near future, but the striker took to Twitter to confirm that he has indeed tested positive after developing certain symptoms during his isolation.

“After close contact, I self-isolated and the last test I took was positive for COVID-19,” he wrote. “I have had symptoms and am following doctor’s orders to recover. Pay attention, everyone! ”

Ahead of the last game without Aguero – Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa – Guardiola admitted that City were missing the 32-year-old and the touch of goal he brings.

“We miss him,” Guardiola said (via BBC Sport). “The numbers speak for themselves. He is the best striker in our history. We need Aguero.

“Sergio is a player who can create for himself and win a game on his own but he hasn’t been with us for a long time. When we didn’t have it, we could have started complaining, but we did just the opposite.

“We want him to come back as soon as possible. But at the same time, we have to move forward and we have done it because of the quality and skills we have. ”

Aguero has yet to score in the Premier League this season and has just two Champions League goals under his belt, with various injuries limiting him to just nine appearances in all competitions.

Despite the Argentine’s fitness struggles, Guardiola has ruled out finding an emergency striker during the January transfer window, and he’s rather ready to keep his faith in Gabriel Jesus, Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne, who were all deployed as central strikers in Aguero’s absence.
