SEO vs AEO vs GEO: Which Should You Prioritize First?

Written by

Every brand is suddenly being told it needs SEO, AEO, and GEO at the same time as if all three carry equal urgency. In reality, they don’t. Each one answers to a different type of search behaviour, and prioritizing the wrong one first usually means wasting a quarter of work on a channel that wasn’t losing you traffic to begin with.

What Each One Actually Covers

SEO is still about ranking on the traditional results page  the ten blue links, the map pack, the shopping carousel. AEO, Answer Engine Optimization, is about being the direct answer inside a featured snippet, a voice assistant reply, or a quick-answer box. GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, is the newest layer: getting cited, summarised, or recommended by AI systems like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity when a user never sees a search results page at all.

Start by Diagnosing, Not Guessing

The right starting point depends on where your traffic is actually leaking, not on which acronym is trending. A site with strong rankings but declining click-through rate has an AEO problem it’s being answered, not clicked. A site invisible in AI chat responses despite decent rankings has a GEO problem. A site with neither rankings nor citations usually has a foundational SEO problem, and no amount of schema markup will fix that first.

Why SEO Still Comes First for Most Brands

AEO and GEO both depend on a foundation SEO already built: crawlable pages, clear site structure, and content that demonstrates real expertise. AI systems and answer engines largely pull from the same indexed, well-structured content that ranks well in traditional search. Skipping SEO to chase GEO is like trying to get quoted by a journalist before you’ve published anything worth quoting. This is exactly why the underlying signal stack across SEO, AEO, and GEO is more unified than the three separate labels suggest  the brands that win at GEO are almost always the ones who never neglected the SEO basics underneath it.

When AEO Deserves Priority

If your industry is dominated by quick factual questions  pricing, hours, definitions, comparisons  AEO deserves early attention. Structuring content around direct question-answer pairs, using FAQPage schema, and keeping answers concise before expanding into detail can capture visibility even without a top-three ranking.

When GEO Deserves Priority

For brands in categories where people increasingly research through AI chat  software comparisons, health questions, financial advice  GEO can no longer wait. This means building topical authority, structured data, and clear authorship signals specifically so AI models trust and cite the content, not just so search engines rank it.

A Simple Way to Decide

A useful exercise is to pull three numbers side by side: organic rankings for your core keywords, click-through rate on pages that already rank well, and how often your brand shows up when you ask ChatGPT or Gemini about your own category. Whichever number looks weakest points to the layer that needs attention first. Treating SEO, AEO, and GEO as three separate budgets to split evenly usually spreads resources too thin to move any of them meaningfully.

The Bottom Line

There’s no universal order  but there is a universal starting point: know where you’re actually losing visibility before choosing where to invest. Running a structured content audit for answer-engine readiness typically makes the priority obvious within a week, rather than a quarter of guessing.
