Real Madrid have made Villarreal’s Pau Torres a defensive target for next summer, as Sergio Ramos’ future remains in the air.
Defense appears as an area to be renovated at the Bernabeu ahead of 2021/21. Apart from Ramos, who turns 35 this year and whose contract expires this summer, Madrid currently have Raphael Varane, Eder Militao and Nacho Fernandez as central defensive options – although the latter two have played a combined total of just five games this season. in La Liga.
Reports indicate Los Blancos could be getting closer to a pre-contract deal for all-round Bayern Munich star David Alaba. However, COPE reporter Manolo Lama reports that there are plans for another signing at the back also with Torres de Villarreal as the target.
Torres, 23, who has also been linked with Liverpool, Manchester City and United in recent months, has a contractual release clause set at € 50million (£ 45million) at Villarreal, though it is said that Real Madrid hope to “cut the price in half”.
Whether Torres is brought in to play with or instead of club captain Ramos is another matter.
While Real Madrid recently agreed to a 10% pay cut with all players to help manage the continued financial impact of the pandemic, the issue of Ramos’ renewal remains.
The COPE report claims that no formal discussions have yet taken place between Ramos and President Florentino Perez, a situation which “is starting to bother” the player with his current contract this summer.
AS report Los Blancos are unable to offer their superstar captain the kind of deal they expected, with the club estimating they will suffer a € 300m (£ 266m) deficit this year.
In addition to the issue of salary and bonuses, COPE adds that Ramos wants a two-year extension, which is not attractive for the Madrid hierarchy.
90 mins reported in November that all of the Premier League greats had expressed an interest in Ramos, if he officially chose to leave Madrid, although the player would rather stay at the Bernabeu.
