Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has tested positive for the coronavirus, although the 73-year-old club manager is currently not showing any symptoms.
Real have confirmed that Perez will continue to be tested periodically to monitor his condition. The club have not provided any further information on the potential spillover effects at the Bernabeu.
Los Blancos coach Zinedine Zidane had also already tested positive for the virus ahead of the Alaves game in La Liga just under two weeks ago. But the Frenchman was able to return to the sidelines in time for the loss to Levante last weekend.
Real are tied on points with Barcelona, but the trail city rivals Atletico by 10 points in the La Liga title race. As the two giants struggle this season amid the ongoing pandemic and financial limitations preventing much-needed squad reviews at each club, Atletico has taken full advantage.
Diego Simeone led Los Rojiblancos to the title in 2013/14 and if he did it again, it would be only the second time neither Real nor Barca have been crowned Spanish champions since 2004.
