Rangers clinch a landslide victory in Steven Gerrard’s 150th game in charge

Rangers extended their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership table to 23 points with a convincing 5-0 victory over Ross County at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Ryan Kent, Filip Helander, Joe Aribo, Ryan Jack and Connor Goldson saw Steven Gerrard’s side pick up comfortable winners against the Staggies – who currently sit third – as they move closer to their first title champion in 10 years.

The Gers took the lead in six minutes, Alfredo Morelos deflecting James Tavernier’s cross on the way to Ryan, who sent a looped header into the net.

The hosts were given a penalty six minutes later, but regular set-piece expert Tavernier saw his surprisingly tame kick saved by Ross Laidlaw.

Kent could have pulled off a hat trick in the first half, smacking the woodwork on either side of Tavernier’s missed penalty, but just before the half hour mark the Rangers finally doubled their advantage. Helander rose to the top of a corner and planted a towering head in front of Laidlaw.

Aribo gave the Rangers a 3-0 halftime lead with a formidable solo effort, mounting two challenges before looping an effort into the top corner at a sharp angle.

County hit the woods twice in the opening trade of the second period, first by Harry Paton and then Alex Iacovitti, but from then on, business was business as usual for Gerrard. Right after the hour they had a fourth, with Jack applying the finishing touches to a formidable team move to mark his return from injury.

Goldson added a fifth for the Rangers with nine minutes left as he headed Borna Barisic’s corner into the bottom corner of the net to seal a three-point routine for the Scottish Premiership leaders – the perfect way to celebrate the 150th Gerrard game in charge.

Next up for the Rangers is a trip to Hibernian on Wednesday night.
