Premier League preview and predictions: Gameweek 22

The best title race we have ever seen is slowly heading towards a sad attempt to keep pace with Manchester City, but it’s time to give the group of hunters another chance to prove they are really good at football.

The game that jumps off the page is the London derby between Tottenham and Chelsea, but given how this season has gone we might end up getting more excitement from Newcastle against Crystal Palace.

(No, we won’t. Obviously)

Here is 90 minspreview of gameweek 22.

Sheffield United v West Brom

What time is the kick-off? 6:00 p.m. (GMT)

Where is it played? Bramall lane

TV channel? BT Sport 2

This one might struggle to attract too many viewers. Even Sheffield United and West Brom fans might be more drawn to the other 6pm game.

What this game has to offer is that it’s one of those famous relegation six points. It’s 20th against 19th in the Premier League, and while that says a lot about the quality that could be presented, it also tells you what’s at stake here.

United will be relieved to take a little break after facing Tottenham, Manchester United and Manchester City in their last three games, and with two wins out of their last four, they appear to have been bit by the winning bug a bit.

The same can’t be said for West Brom, who have just two wins in their last 22 games in all competitions. The team in 20th is actually the fit team for this one.

Prediction: Sheffield United 1-0 West Brom

Wolves vs. Arsenal

Where is it played? Molinous

TV channel? BT Sport 1 (UK)

Without a doubt the best of 6pm games, we have a Wolves side desperate to prove that they don’t just depend on Raul Jimenez against Arsenal, who are slowly coming back into the top four.

Arsenal are undefeated in their last seven Premier League games (mentally what happens when you actually play with players who deserve minutes, right?), And they’ll be heading into this matchweek just eight points from the top four.

Wolves would kill to be in this position. Two Premier League wins since October mean Nuno’s side are floating around the relegation zone these days, and they haven’t shown anything that would give you confidence in saying they can turn the tide.

Prediction: Wolves 0-2 Arsenal

Manchester United v Southampton

What time is the kick-off? 8:15 p.m. (GMT)

Where is it played? Old trafford

Just weeks before being the best team in the country, a loss to Sheffield United and a boring draw with Arsenal injected much needed realism into Manchester United’s fan base.

Now winless in their last three games, United have ceded the lead in the title race to City, and they’ll be determined to ensure that the gap doesn’t widen further here, but it’s easier to say what to do.

They will meet a team from Southampton who are still trying to find out if they have enough for a top four push. Their 1-0 victory over Liverpool was followed by back-to-back defeats to Leicester, Arsenal and Aston Villa, and now things aren’t so rosy.

Neither side brings a particularly good shape into this one, but both have enough quality to flip the switch and make it something special. Probably worth watching, but stay out of my Twitter mentions if it’s a 0-0.

Newcastle v Crystal Palace

Despite what the unnecessary dig in the intro might suggest, Crystal Palace can be quite fun to watch at times. It just depends if Ebere Eze feels it.

The 22-year-old was the savior of Palace again in the 1-0 win over Wolves last time around, scoring a losing streak that saw them score three goals at West Ham and four at Manchester City. Is it the momentum?

Hosting this one will be Newcastle, who did their best to dismiss their reputation as “allergic to pleasure” by beating Everton 2-0 in their last game. When it’s your first win in nine games, you have to do a little bit more to make the fans smile.

City played that perfectly. They sat in the shadows, let everyone write them off, then jumped up when everyone decided to give up being good at football.

The league leaders have not lost since the 2-0 loss to Tottenham in November and have scored ten goals in their last three games. They’re up for this one, and that seems like bad news for Sean Dyche’s Burnley.

Burnley was overwhelmed by Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea in their last game and will barely catch his breath by the time City travel to town. It could be long, long evening for them.

After costing Frank Lampard his job at Chelsea, Leicester took the accelerator pedal off a bit.

A 2-0 win over Southampton was followed by a draw against Everton and a loss against Leeds, with Leicester struggling in the absence of top scorer Jamie Vardy, who is out of the squad to undergo surgery on a hernia.

Vardy is on the mend, but he won’t be back in time for this one which means Leicester will have to find another way through Fulham.

Luckily they’re against Fulham, so they’re definitely going to score.

Prediction: Fulham 0-2 Leicester

Leeds v Everton

What time is the kick-off? 7:30 p.m. (GMT)

Where is it played? Elland Road

TV channel? BT Sport 3 (UK)

With Patrick Bamford on track to be the best striker in football history, Leeds will be quite confident ahead of their meeting with an Everton side who have recently managed to make Newcastle look good… in some way or another. ‘another.

Two consecutive wins have taken Leeds to 12th place in the Premier League table, and their current fixture means a race for a European place cannot be ruled out at the moment. If they can keep building up momentum, the sky is the limit.

It’s Carlo Ancelotti’s job to stop this. The Everton boss is probably still having nightmares after the 2-0 loss to Newcastle, and to say he will demand a reaction here would be an understatement.

Prediction: Leeds 2-2 Everton

Aston Villa vs. West Ham

What time is the kick-off? 8:15 p.m. (GMT)

Where is it played? Villa Park

TV channel? BT Sport 2 (UK)

West Ham is doing so well this season that fans have felt disappointed to see their side lose 3-1 to defending champions Liverpool. A few years ago, the Hammers would have bit your hand for this result because it wasn’t as demeaning as it could have been.

With a nosebleed in the fifth, West Ham’s six-game winning streak may be over, but confidence will continue to flow. David Moyes has put his squad together perfectly, and they are proving too strong for teams across the country.

Will Villa be the next to drop? They ended a miserable formatting with a 1-0 win over Southampton last time around, but their inconsistency makes it a tough game to follow. How can you put seven behind Liverpool and let Burnley score three against you in the same season?

Prediction: Aston Villa 1-2 West Ham

Liverpool v Brighton

TV channel? BT Sport 1 (UK), fuboTV (US)

Wait, are you telling me it was an overreaction to say that England’s best team finished because of a few games below par?

Three goals in each of their last two Premier League games show Liverpool are not ready to give up their title without a fight. Mohamed Salah’s second goal against West Ham was a stark reminder of how devastating this team can be.

It should Brighton are worried, but the Seagulls are flying high after not only pulling off a result against Spurs, but overwhelmingly deserve the three points. They are better than their poor track record might suggest.

Even if a three-game unbeaten streak is in morale, Brighton know they will be really against him here, and the job will be made even more difficult if Liverpool have a defense made up entirely of defenders for once.

Gameweek 22 might keep you waiting, but the end result should be worth it.

Jose Mourinho’s first round against Thomas Tuchel promises to be an exciting affair, not least because it’s a London derby. It’s about as important as it is for these two teams. Failure is not an option.

Chelsea are flying high under Tuchel after completely dismantling Burnley last time around, and the boss will be desperate to make a good first impression in a derby.

He will have to have one on Mourinho if he is to do this, but luckily for Tuchel it hasn’t been too difficult lately. A Spurs without Harry Kane looked slack against Liverpool and Brighton, and it will take a major turnaround to stop the rot here.

Prediction: Tottenham 0-2 Chelsea
