Premier League preview and predictions: Gameweek 18

The FA Cup third round may still be fresh in the memory, but there is no time for rest and recovery as 12 Premier League sides dive straight into the action midweek.

League leaders Liverpool are among the teams taking a welcome break, but for some of the Reds’ fiercest rivals – namely Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham and, uh, Everton, it’s a chance to do shake things up in the title race and charge for European qualifying places.

Injury, illness and general fatigue are definitely making the rounds, so what impact will that have on the outcome of the six games to be played? Here is90 minsgameweek preview and forecast 18.

Sheffield United v Newcastle

What time is the kick-off? 6:00 p.m. (GMT)
Where is it played? Bramall lane
TV channel? Sky Sports Main Event (UK), Peacock Premium (US)

The 2020/21 Premier League season has been on for four months and poor Sheffield United are yet to pick up a victory.

What are the fewest points collected in a Premier League season?

The Blades have so far played 17 games this season without a win – becoming the first top-flight team since 1902 to step into the New Year without a single three-point run. To become the worst side in Premier League history, they will need to beat Derby County’s incredible 11-point draw – achieved in the 2007/08 campaign with a -69 goal difference. Yikes.

The FA Cup away win at Bristol Rovers could be the catalyst for change, and there is probably no better opposition to face than Steve Bruce’s Newcastle. Magpies blow very hot and cold, and are a side that often seems deprived of any creative inspiration.

Callum Wilson’s goals kept his head above water, but Sheffield United can finally their nose on the line.

Prediction: Sheffield United 1-0 Newcastle

Burnley v Manchester United

Manchester United have the chance to dominate the Premier League table for the first time since day one of the 2018/19 season – provided they can send an ever-improving Burnley to Turf Moor.

Will Paul Pogba be in good shape?

At this point, it’s unclear whether the Frenchman, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw and Eric Bailly will be fit to start. Pogba might not be necessary anyway, such was the impressive form of Scott McTominay, who led the Red Devils to the FA Cup third round victory.

The Red Devils have been very good on the road this season, and led by Bruno Fernandes confidence will be there even though the Clarets have lost just two of their last nine Premier League games.

Burnley beat MK Dons on penalties this weekend, and while the results have improved after a terrible start to the season, they still struggle in front of goal. United, with the carrot hanging in front of them, should have all the tools to do the job.

Prediction: Burnley 0-2 Manchester United

Wolves vs. Everton

What time is the kick-off? 8:15 p.m. (GMT)
Where is it played? Molinous
TV channel? Sky Sports Main Event (UK), Peacock Premium (US)

Recent form would suggest Everton are favorites to come away with three points against Wolves at Molineux, but Carlo Ancelotti’s side will be more than aware of the threat the hosts carry despite Raul Jimenez’s absence.

Pedro Neto seems like a true broad livewire, and Adama Traore’s decisive victory over Crystal Palace might be just what he needs to regain some form in the league.

The Toffees have won four of their last five games, but have slipped against West Ham at Goodison Park on New Years Day. There are also minor concerns over the stopping of Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s supreme run; he has now played five Premier League games without a goal after scoring 11 games in as many games to open the season and will be out on Tuesday with a hamstring injury.

Prediction: Wolves 1-1 Everton

Manchester City v Brighton

Manchester City have slipped under the radar for much of this season simply because they haven’t been at their best goal.

But Pep Guardiola’s side have only scored five open-play goals this season, and the resurgence of John Stones alongside Ruben Dias in central defense has seen City deliver results and propel themselves into the race. On title.

Raheem Sterling injured?

There is speculation that Sterling could be banned from the game, but so far there has been no official confirmation from the club regarding the nature of any issues. He played no part in the FA Cup win over Birmingham, so his availability remains in the air.

Brighton survived a nervous penalty shootout against Newport County, the Newport club, but Graham Potter’s side need to do better to have any chance of coming away with a positive result. A back-to-wall job seems more likely, and even if Sergio Aguero is unavailable, City could be set for a big win.

Prediction: Manchester City 4-0 Brighton

Tottenham vs. Fulham

What time is the kick-off? 8:15 p.m. (GMT)
Where is it played? Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
TV channel? Sky Sports Main Event (UK), fuboTV (US)

Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham were originally scheduled to play at Aston Villa, but a major outbreak of COVID-19 within their squad – an outbreak that forced Dean Smith to dive into the club’s nursery in order to fill their FA Cup fixture against Liverpool on Friday – forced a rethink.

Instead, Spurs face Fulham in a game that was originally scheduled to take place just before the start of the year, but has been postponed due to positive cases of COVID in the Cottagers’ camp.

Spurs are rightly the favorites to win the game despite the late schedule change, and are expected to have new legs to overtake them after fielding part-times Dele Alli and Carlos Vinicius, among others, in the Regulator’s victory. speed on Marine.

Prediction: Tottenham 2-0 Fulham

Arsenal v Crystal Palace

Arsenal have decided to splash the money on Nicolas Pepe (exorbitant transfer fees) and Willian (ridiculously high salaries) but their recent rejuvenation, in a way, has been largely inspired by two academy products, Bukayo Saka and Emile. Smith Rowe.

The dynamic duo have got the Gunners playing with a bit of swagger, and they’ll need all of their creative flair to break down a Crystal Palace side who, apart from seven Liverpool goals, are rather stubborn in defense.

Throw the talented duo of Wilfried Zaha and Eberechi Eze into the mix on the counter and this game could be a far cry from a walk in the park for Arsenal. Still, a slim home win is the most likely outcome.

Prediction: Arsenal 2-1 Crystal Palace
