Player ratings as Dominic Calvert-Lewin scores extra time equalizer
Manchester United threw in two vital points on Saturday night, drawing a 3-3 draw with Everton in a thrilling clash at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils took the lead in the 24th minute, when Marcus Rashford scored a charming cross into the box and Edinson Cavani took off his marker to clinically return.
Bruno Fernandes then managed a delicious cut shot on Robin Olsen’s first-half timeout, and Ole stars Gunnar Solskjaer entered the half-time break with a two-goal advantage.
But Everton refused to lie down and immediately pulled one out early in the second half when David De Gea placed the ball in Abdoulaye Doucoure’s path and the midfielder tapped into an empty net. The Toffees surprised Man Utd by finishing the return three minutes later with James Rodriguez tugging the ball into the near post from De Gea from the edge of the box.
Olsen then returned the lead to the Red Devils, inexplicably allowing Scott McTominay’s head to limp down the line from a cross from Luke Shaw, but the drama was not over there as Dominic Calvert-Lewin hit a dramatic equalizer in the 95th minute to snatch a point.
Let’s take a look at the player ratings of an exciting night out at Old Trafford.
David De Gea (GK) – 4/10 – Waved a lazy, lazy hand trying to push Calvert-Lewin’s cross out of danger, placing it in an opponent instead. Didn’t cover himself in glory for the final goal either.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) – 7/10 – Guarded that right side carefully and secured another assist for himself and his loyal FPL, sending the ball to Fernandes, who did the rest.
Victor Lindelof (CB) – 6/10 – Almost had a nosebleed from a marauding slalom in Everton’s penalty area, but was dispossessed before any real damage was done. Took the ball from Maguire’s header to a cross, and confusion cost Man Utd the equalizer.
Harry Maguire (CB) – 5/10 – Stuck his head on a number of crosses to deny Calvert-Lewin space to operate. Relinquished possession late, but was likely fouled. Everyone played in the final free kick.
Luke Shaw (LB) – 7/10 – Another decent performance from the in-form England defender. Over and under hit on the left, and pricked Olsen’s palms with a screwdriver. Curled up in the cross for the third and deserved the three points.
Scott McTominay (CM) – 8/10 – Led the midfielder, charging and winning the ball with a lot of drive and energy. A true dominant figure in the center of the park, and rarely wasted a pass. Stuck his head on the ball that was crawling past Olsen.
Paul Pogba (CM) – 6/10 – Pogba was progressing through the game until his injury in the 39th minute, which forced Solskjaer to make one of his substitutions before half-time. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
Bruno Fernandes (CM) – 8/10 – What a beautiful, beautiful goal. Curled up to perfection and caught Olsen completely off guard. Always vertical to get Man Utd moving. Shot again.
Mason Greenwood (RW) – 7/10 – He planted that right flank numerous times, but twisted a wide shot when he should have done better. He became frustrated when things didn’t go as planned in the second half.
Edinson Cavani (ST) – 7/10 – Powered home opening with a wonderful head, giving Godfrey the slip with his experience. Steer the line intelligently.
Marcus Rashford (LW) – 7/10 – Whipped in the most delicious of crosses, just begging Cavani to put it away. He did. Opportunities missed, but Holgate toasted all night.
Fred (CM) – 6/10
Axel Tuanzebe (CB) – N / A
Robin Olsen (GK) – 4/10 – Left totally stunned by the brass on Fernandes to cut the ball from the edge of the box. We do not even have the words to explain the error of the third objective. Did he seem glitch like a FIFA character?
Mason Holgate (RB) – 6/10 – Not his best display. The ball was pushed aside too many times and a rush of blood to the head almost allowed Rashford to reestablish the hosts’ lead. Constantly returned by the winger.
Michael Keane (CB) – 7/10 – Well defended, eliminating any air threat in his quarters and keeping Cavani at bay. The best of the bottom line.
Ben Godfrey (CB) – 6/10 – Beaten it all ends with Cavani’s brilliant move, misjudging the flight of the ball for the opener. Provided the marvelous ball behind Man Utd’s defense for Doucoure’s eventual strike.
Lucas Digne (LB) – 6/10 – I didn’t do enough to close the Rashford cross, giving him all the time in the world to pick his spot. Can’t get close to Greenwood sometimes.
Abdoulaye Doucoure (CM) – 8/10 – Hit home to bring Everton back into the game, then cut the ball to the edge of the box for Rodriguez to equalize.
André Gomes (CM) – 6/10 – Didn’t have much joy in the early stages, but became the game as Everton started to gain a foothold. Tidy, if not spectacular.
Tom Davies (CM) – 6/10 – Provided a lot of bite and vigor in the midfield, and put the pressure in the second half when the Toffees started to turn the screw.
James Rodriguez (RW) – 7/10 – Shot in a calm first half, but exploded in the second, crushing the equalizer with the most precise of finishes in the near post. Unfortunately subtitled.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin (ST) – 7/10 – How did he miss ?! Put the ball off once clean at the end of half time. Made amends by providing the goal that halved Everton’s deficit. His time has come, however, albeit very, very late. Decisive.
Richarlison (LW) – 7/10 – He looked to stretch Man Utd with his pace on the left and kept Wan-Bissaka on his toes. Rejected a great late chance to reach the level.
Gylfi Sigurdsson (CM) – 7/10
Alex Iwobi (CM) – 6/10
Josh King (ST) – 7/10
