Player ratings as Bruno Fernandes sends Red Devils to FA Cup 5th round
A free kick from substitute Bruno Fernandes gave Manchester United a 3-2 victory over Liverpool on Sunday, with the Red Devils reserving their place in the FA Cup fifth round at the expense of their rivals.
After a timid opening, the visitors took the lead when Mohamed Salah finished well after a through pass from Roberto Firmino.
Soon after, United leveled things off thanks to Mason Greenwood. Marcus Rashford threw an incredible cross ball over the top and Greenwood calmly knocked it over before heading home.
Minutes after the break, the home side took the lead with Rashford capitalizing on Rhys Williams’ mistake, before placing the ball in front of Alisson. Liverpool then took advantage of an error on his part; Edinson Cavani’s pass was picked up by James Milner, who then played a neat trade with Firmino that saw Salah break through.
The teams continued to trade punches before substitute Bruno Fernandes struck a free kick just outside the box to make it 3-2.
Dean Henderson (GK) – 6/10 – Mastered his zone well, but perhaps could have done better for both goals.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) – 6/10 – Some good, some bad. Well defended but his contribution in the final third was negligible. His long death was also sometimes savage.
Victor Lindelof (CB) – 6/10 – Problems caused by Firmino’s intelligent movement. Passing sometimes lacked composure.
Harry Maguire (CB) – 6/10 – Slightly hesitant in his defense from the start. Settled in as things progressed.
Luke Shaw (LB) – 7/10 – perhaps could have done more to prevent the game from opening, but he recovered very well after that. Steadily advances and registers three key passes.
Paul Pogba (CM) – 7/10 – Impressed defensively in the first half – it was his tackle that led to United’s first. Was a little trigger happy with his shot, firing five shots without hitting the target.
Scott McTominay (CM) – 7/10 – The game overtook him early on but he grew into things. Dominant in the air.
Donny van de Beek (AM) – 5/10 – An essential start for the Dutchman but he failed to impress. He drifted into promising positions early on but rarely swayed things.
Mason Greenwood (RW) – 8/10 – Provided a timely reminder of his ruthless streak with a ruthless finish. Also assisted Rashford’s goal. Unlucky to be replaced.
Edinson Cavani (ST) – 6/10 – Sloppily gave the ball away to give Liverpool their second. Worked hard but very little broken for him.
Marcus Rashford (LW) – 8/10 – What. An access card. His aim was also magnificent. One of his best performances of the season.
Bruno Fernandes – 8/10 – He’s a winner of the match. Pure and simple.
Fred – 6/10 – Adds some solidity to the United midfielder down the home stretch.
Anthony Martial – N / A
Alisson (GK) – 6/10 – There wasn’t much he could do about United’s clinical results.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (RB) – 5/10 – only completed five of his 10 long balls and failed to produce a single precise cross. Rashford had plenty of room behind him.
Rhys Williams (CB) – 5/10 – Didn’t look at this level, to be honest. An early mistake could have been costly. A second error after the break allowed Rashford to score. Maybe sign a center-back, guys?
Fabinho (CB) – 6/10 – His least accomplished center-back display to date. I struggled to drag Williams during the game.
Andy Robertson (LB) – 6/10 – 10/10 for trying to put off Greenwood by yelling in his face. Its performance does not match, however. Looked in the legs and only managed two crosses.
Thiago Alcantara (CM) – 7/10 – Solid display and shuttle from the Spanish. Getting in and was generally attractive in possession.
James MIlner (CM) – 6/10 – Incorrect evaluation of the pass from Rashford, who led United’s opening goal. Compensated for this by picking up Cavani’s sloppy ball, before setting it on a plate for Salah to score his second.
Georginio Wijnaldum (CM) – 5/10 – Average. Failed to record a tackle or interception in his 60 minutes on the pitch. A few loose passes too.
Mo Salah (RW) – 8/10 – Took his goals exceptionally well. The scoring will be a great relief after the pressure has mounted in recent weeks.
Roberto Firmino (ST) – 8/10 – Very nice assist for Salah’s goal and also had a big hand in the second.
Curtis Jones (LW) – 6/10 – Played stubbornly on the left wing but didn’t have much joy. Looked better after passing through central midfield.
Sadio Mane – 5/10 – Slightly reckless after coming. It took on a yellow shortly after its introduction.
Xherdan Shaqiri – 6/10 – Blown and puffed but created little.
Divock Origi – 6/10 – Often times, Liverpool’s trump card in games like this, it hasn’t had an impact.
