Player ratings as Alisson’s howlers give City three points

9

Two shocking mistakes from Alisson and an inspiring display from Phil Foden helped Manchester City extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to five points, with a 4-1 victory over Liverpool.

After a lukewarm half hour of opening, the game came to life when City received a penalty. Fabinho was the culprit, tripping Raheem Sterling into the box, but Gundogan hit his kick over the bar well.

After the break, the German made up for his mistake by opening the scoring. Raheem Sterling was instrumental in the rise to power, passing Trent Alexander-Arnold before firing him to Phil Foden. Although Foden couldn’t convert, Gundogan was there to crush the rebound and carry it 1-0.

Just past the hour, Liverpool leveled things with Mohamed Salah winning and then converting a penalty, following a rare Ruben Dias error. It didn’t take long for City to push their noses forward. Foden took advantage of an ample pass from Alisson, intercepting the ball and passing several defenders, before pulling it out for Gundogan to crush home.

Alisson’s nightmarish afternoon continued a few minutes later when he offered the ball again to Bernardo Silva who found Sterling in the box, who slapped it into an empty net. Foden then added some shine to the score with a nice solo effort.

Here are your notes from Anfield Reds and Cityzens players…

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Alisson (GK) – 3/10 – Probably the worst performance of his career. I had an absolute horror show for the second goal… and again for the third.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (RB) – 5/10 – Much improved in the future. His defense was soft, however, with Sterling passing him far too easily.

Fabinho (CB) – 4/10 – The challenge on Sterling that led to the penalty was awkward. Foden also caused him some trouble.

Jordan Henderson (CB) – 6/10 – Well defended but the passage was a bit fragile. I should have put a tackle on Foden for the second.

Andrew Robertson (LB) – 6/10 – kept Mahrez quiet but could have offered a bit more in the final third.

Curtis Jones, Ederson

Thiago Alcantara (CM) – 5/10 – Picked up his usual yellow card within five minutes. Lack of creativity, not completing a single key pass.

Curtis Jones (CM) – 7/10 – Maybe a little too sure when he passed away early. Helped with some of his team’s best attacks in the second half, putting a shot right past the post.

Georginio Wijnaldum (CM) – 5/10 – Fairly clean and tidy but let the game go by.

Mo Salah (RW) – 7/10 – Well capitalized on Ruben Dias’ mistake and converted on the spot.

Roberto Firmino (ST) – 5/10 – Stung Ederson’s palms with a fierce strike in the first half. Other than that, very quiet.

Sadio Mane (LW) – 5/10 – Let a great chance go begging. Quite anonymous thereafter.

James Milner – 5/10 – His introduction for Jones was a strange change and Liverpool looked less dangerous after arriving.

Xherdan Shaqiri – 5/10 – Very few notes.

Konstantinos Tsimikas – N / A

Ederson (GK) – 6/10 – Not much to do. His chances of becoming the true number one in Brazil are much higher now …

Joao Cancelo (RB) – 7/10 – Took some great areas in the attacking half-spaces and was solid at the back.

John Stones (CB) – 7/10 – Beautifully composed in possession. Also defended solidly, registering six clearances.

Ruben Dias (CB) – 6/10 – His mistake allowed Salah to go down and then level things from there, but generally solid otherwise.

Oleksandr Zinchenko (LB) – 7/10 – Another impressive performance. Disciplined defensively and threatened to move forward.

Ilkay Gundogan

Bernardo Silva (CM) – 7/10 – Involved in good attacking moves and set up the third base.

Rodri (CM) – 7/10 – Gave City a solid foundation with precise passing and smart defensive positioning.

Ilkay Gundogan (CM) – 8/10 – His penalty was really horrible but he made up for it by scoring not once but twice after the break as he continued his fine goal form.

Riyad Mahrez (RW) – 6/10 – A fairly silent display. It was a nuisance though, resulting in two fouls.

Phil Foden (CF) – 9/10 – A potentially decisive performance for the career. Truly world-class focus and support.

Raheem Sterling (LW) – 8/10 – Created Gundogan’s goal with a mazy dribble. Gave Alexander-Arnold a scorching scorching afternoon.

Gabriel Jesus – 7/10 – Added to City’s attack. Work hard.
