Ole Gunnar Solskjaer provides update on potential extension of Edinson Cavani’s contract
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did not rule out the possibility of extending Edinson Cavani’s contract with Manchester United, adding that the striker had “a few years of his own”.
The Uruguayan has had an instant impact at Old Trafford since signing on deadline day, scoring three goals and two assists in his eight league appearances for the club – including an impressive brace at Southampton as United secured another comeback victory.
Although his current contract expires next summer, the Red Devils have the option of extending the 33-year-old’s stay with the club for another year, and Solskjaer has hinted they may be ready to trigger the clause.
“At the moment, it looks like he has a few years left in him,” Solskjaer said, reported by MEN. “So I wouldn’t say anything else. He had a big impact when he came here. Let’s focus on improving everyone but he has a few years left.
“He’s definitely a starter. You don’t classify a player of that quality like anything else. We have a lot of starters, more than 11.
“That’s the thing when you’re at Man Utd. You should believe and have confidence in yourself. I trust him. We have a good competition for places. He will probably start more games than he starts. ”
Upon arriving at the club, Cavani immediately received jersey number seven, a team number synonymous with great alumni such as George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Many players flexed under the pressure to be handed the famous jersey, although Solskjaer added that former PSG were desperate for the jersey number and were sure they could handle the pressure it brings.
“It was the first thing he asked me, if he could wear the number seven,” Solskjaer added. “Obviously we’re talking about the history of the shirt.
“When you think of the story of his career and the experience he had, his personality from the conversation I had with him and when I watched him before, I had no doubts. that he can handle jersey number seven.
“He’s so meticulous and professional. His habits and everything about him shows why he had the career he has. Even at his age now he’s one of the fittest players we have. ”
