Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said Manchester United will keep track of the ankle injury Edinson Cavani suffered in the 9-0 win over Southampton on Tuesday night.
The former Paris Saint-Germain forward scored a header as the Red Devils revolted at Old Trafford but came out at half-time to be replaced by Anthony Martial.
Speaking after the game, United boss Solskjaer said (quoted by the club’s official website): “Edinson had a bad ankle tackle so he had to clear himself.
“He probably would have loved to be there to score goals. But there was no point in taking risks. Hopefully it doesn’t swell too much. ”
The goal was Cavani’s fifth in the Premier League this season, while his replacement Martial came to bring his tally in the division to four. Solskjaer praised the Frenchman as well as Mason Greenwood, who was one of the few United players not to score against the nine-man Saints.
“Martial, it’s good to move him forward, he could have had another with the chip. Unfortunately that was not the case but a good performance from everyone, ”he added.
“You have to try your luck in close or open games, you never know what might be the deciding factor, we know – better than anyone – what a goal difference you can make because we lost the league on goal difference .
“Confidence is one thing, but it was about the mojo and the spark, the X factor. Mason Greenwood was great and his performance was great for a player who didn’t score a goal.
The win did wonders for United’s goal difference, bringing it to +19, second best with Liverpool and just five behind Manchester City. They are again tied on points with Pep Guardiola’s side but have played two more games.
