Mesut Ozil in advanced talks with DC United from MLS
Arsenal outcast Mesut Ozil are in advanced talks with DC United, on the MLS side, according to a report.
Ozil hasn’t played since March and was excluded from the Gunners’ 25-man Premier League squad by Mikel Arteta at the start of the season.
He has been linked with moves to China and Turkey in recent transfer windows but, according to football.london, he is now close to securing a transfer to the United States. Ozil is reportedly in negotiations with DC United, with the MLS team offering him a lucrative deal.
The package includes a pledge to help the player develop their “M10” brand – not the highway – in the country. DC United are also offering to advertise their 39 Steps Coffee inside their stadium, as well as give it their own product line and the chance to be the face of the club.
His current contract with Arsenal will expire at the end of June, midway through the 2021 MLS season. However, as Ozil is deemed to be in excess of needs in north London, the club can let him go early.
The German isn’t the only player to leave the Gunners in the near future. Having already let Sead Kolašinac and William Saliba go on loan this month, the club are also hoping to see the back of Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
Like Ozil, he was excluded from the club’s Premier League squad and according to Fabrizio Romano, Genoa inquired about the defender.
Arsenal had been linked with some signings from them in recent weeks with a creative midfielder seen as a priority. Real Madrid’s Wantaway star Isco has been named linked, though the emergence of Emile Smith-Rowe could cause Arteta to reassess his priorities.
