Meaning of Devi Suktam, Benefits and Significance

Written by

Devi Sukta is a divine hymn mentioned in the Rigveda, which glorifies the immense power, divine form, and infinite qualities of the Goddess. This sacred hymn serves as a powerful medium to experience the presence and grace of the Goddess. It describes Maa Bhagwati as the foundation of the entire creation, the mother of all energies, and the supreme governing force of the universe. This Sukta reveals that the Goddess is not just a power but the very essence of all consciousness. She is the cause of creation, sustenance, and dissolution. Her energy pervades the entire animate and inanimate world, and it is through her grace that the universe operates. In essence, Maa Jagadamba is the fundamental foundation of this entire creation, and by her grace, the universe is sustained. The Rigveda contains several special hymns praising the glory of the Goddess, which are collectively known as Devi Suktam. In Shri Durga Saptashati, two types of Devi Suktam are mentioned. Both hold their own unique significance and impact.

1. Vedoktam Devi Suktam-

This Sukta is mentioned in the Rigveda, where the Goddess herself introduces her magnificent form. She proclaims, “I am the supreme ruler of the entire universe, the bestower of wealth upon my devotees, and the foremost among the revered deities.” In this animate and inanimate world, the Goddess alone is the foundation of knowledge, strength, energy, and creation.

Vedoktam Devi Suktam

Om Aham Rudrebhir Vasubhish Charamyaham Adityairuta Vishvadevaih। Aham Mitravarunobha Bibharmyaham Indragni Aham Ashvinobha ॥1॥

I am the Goddess, the embodiment of existence, consciousness, and bliss, the soul of all. I move in the forms of Rudras, Vasus, Adityas, and Vishwadevas. I sustain Mitra and Varuna, Indra and Agni, as well as both Ashwini Kumaras.

Aham Somam Ahanasam Bibharmyaham Tvashtaram Uta Pushanam Bhagham। Aham Dadhami Dravinam Havishmate Supravye Yajamanaya Sunvate ॥2॥

I am the destroyer of enemies and the sustainer of the celestial beings who move through the sky. I uphold Soma Deva, Tvashta Prajapati, Pusha, and Bhaga. I alone grant the noble fruits of sacrifice and unending wealth to the Yajman who, with devotion and offerings, satisfies the gods.

Aham Rashtra Sangamani Vasunam Chikitushee Prathama Yajniyanam। Tam Ma Deva Vyadadhuh Purutra Bhuristhatram Bhuryyaveshayanteem ॥3॥

I am the supreme ruler of the entire universe, the bestower of wealth upon my devotees, the knower of the Supreme Brahman, and the highest among the revered gods. In the form of the manifest world, I exist in various states, and it is I who pervades all beings. Whatever the gods do in different places, they do so only for me.

Maya So Annamatti Yo Vipashyati Yah Praniti Ya Im Shrṇotyuktam। Amantavo Mam Ta Up Kshiyanti Shrudhi Shrut Shraddhivam Te Vadami ॥4॥

Whoever eats food does so by my power, for I am the energy of the enjoyer. Whoever sees, breathes, and hears spoken words can perform these actions only through my strength. Those who do not recognize me in this form gradually fall into ignorance and helplessness. O learned one! I impart to you the knowledge of the supreme truth, which is attained through faith—listen attentively.

Aham eva svayam idam vadami juṣṭam devebhir uta manuṣebhiḥ। Yam kamaye tam tam ugram kṛṇomi tam brahmaṇam tam rsim tam sumedham॥ 5 ॥

I myself describe this rare essence, which is revered by both gods and humans. The one whom I wish to protect, I make more powerful than all others. I make him the creator, Brahma; I grant him profound wisdom as a seer; and I bestow upon him supreme intellect and immense intelligence.

Aham Rudraya dhanura tanomi brahmadvishe sharave hantavau। Aham janaya samadam krinomyaham dyavaprithivi a vivesha ॥ 6 ॥

I am the one who strings Rudra’s bow to destroy the enemies of knowledge and violent demons. I fight against foes to protect those who seek refuge in me. As the inner essence, I pervade both the earth and the sky.

Aham suve pitaram asya moordhan mama yonir apsvantaḥ samudre। Tato vi tiṣṭhe bhuvananu vishvo-tamum dyam varmmaṇopa spṛsami॥ 7 ॥

I alone create the sky, which is the father of this world, based on the Supreme Soul, who is the ultimate foundation of all. In the ocean, which is the source of all beings, and in the waters, which represent the all-pervading mental tendencies, the Supreme Consciousness exists because of me. Therefore, I pervade all the worlds and, with my radiant form, touch even the heavenly realm.

Aham eva vaata iva pravaami aarabhamaaṇaa bhuvanaani vishvaa। Paro divaa para enaa prithivya itaavatee mahinaa sambabhuuva ॥ 8 ॥

I alone initiate the creation of the entire universe as its ultimate cause. Then, without anyone’s inspiration, I move like the wind and engage in action by my own will. I exist beyond both the earth and the heavens. It is by my own divine glory that I have assumed this form.
