Mauricio Pochettino talks about PSG’s Champions League chances and time at Tottenham
New Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino has said the club are in “a good position” to win the Champions League this season.
Pochettino replaced Thomas Tuchel in the hot seat on Saturday after the German was sacked on Christmas Eve. He joined PSG third in Ligue 1 behind Lille and Lyon, despite their considerably greater financial resources.
Even with the Parisians struggling nationally, Pochettino said he was excited about the squad he is inheriting and suggested they have a good chance of ending the club’s Champions League hoodoo.
“The Champions League is important for PSG as are other competitions,” he said (via GFFN)
“We will face Barcelona in a month. We’re going to have to build something there. When the time comes and when we get all the players back, we will have a team full of quality, we will be in a good position. ”
The post at PSG is Pochettino’s first since leaving Tottenham in 2019 and he predicted it would present a different challenge.
“Each club is different, PSG is one of the biggest clubs in the world, Tottenham is also a huge club where I have fond memories. It’s hard to compare and be objective with Tottenham. It is time for us to move on and be 100% focused on PSG, ”he said.
PSG have been linked with a number of high profile signings in recent times, both Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen – both of whom thrived under Pochettino in north London – both mentioned. Another possible target is Lionel Messi, whose Barcelona contract expires this summer.
However, when asked about his January transfer plans, Pochettino has kept a low profile.
“Santa Claus already gave me a gift to be able to return to this club and manage such a team. I want to take this opportunity to thank Nasser and Leonardo for giving me this chance.
“We know that with all the big clubs like PSG there are a lot of rumors, now I have just arrived, we will try to adapt, we will see later for the rumors”, he said .
