Manchester United trio doubt early injury for Liverpool trip
Manchester United suffered a triple injury ahead of their top-of-the-table clash against Liverpool on Sunday.
The Red Devils reached the top of the Premier League with a relentless 1-0 victory over Burnley on Tuesday night, thanks to a Paul Pogba volley in the second half.
Forward Anthony Martial missed a big chance at the end to put the game out of doubt before grabbing hold of the hamstrings. The Frenchman limped off the field to be replaced by defender Axel Tuanzebe. Moments later, Nemanja Matic came down onto the pitch holding his groin and looked uncomfortable, although he could see the final minutes of the game.
After the game, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also revealed that Sweden defender Victor Lindelof must have missed the game with a recurrence of his back injury which saw Eric Bailly start a fourth consecutive Premier League game.
As relayed by Manchester Evening News, all three are believed to be initial doubts for the game at Anfield, which could see United deviate six points from the Reds with a win.
Eric Bailly would be Lindelof’s natural replacement to continue his good form alongside captain Harry Maguire, while Solskjaer has tended to go for the energy and mobility of Scott McTominay and Fred for big games in the past.
But with Martial’s absence, United could have more of a problem. Edinson Cavani has yet to score in the Premier League as a starter, while Mason Greenwood has been on hold for most of the season. This could lead to a system change for the league leaders, with Marcus Rashford moving up front in a two, with an additional defender used in the starting lineup.
Liverpool have their own pre-match injury issues with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez being left out and Joel Matip struggling to get back into shape as well.
