Liverpool have opened talks with Celta Vigo over the transfer of 16-year-old center-back Stefan Bajcetic, who was due to move to Manchester United.
Bajcetic has yet to play senior football but has impressed at the youth level, with Liverpool and United scouts extremely impressed with Serbia’s performance for the Vigo academy.
There had been rumors that United were making an offer to land Bajcetic in January, but Faro de Vigo revealed that the center-back has rejected the possibility of moving to United and will instead bring his talents to Anfield.
The Liverpool Echo is not yet so committed to Bajcetic’s move to Anfield, but their report says Liverpool are “confident” to secure a deal in the coming days.
Jurgen Klopp’s team face a race against time to secure the deal on the line as work permit rules set to change with the UK’s exit from the European Union on the 1st January, which will ban English sides from signing European players under the age of 18. 18.
Liverpool are now hoping to close the deal now, while Bajcetic will still be able to get a permit to play in England, but closing an international move within days is easier said than done.
The Reds believe they can offer young players a real path to senior citizens, with Neco Williams, Curtis Jones and Rhys Williams the latest examples of academy stars who have broken through.
Strengthening the academy has recently been a priority for Liverpool. They recently struck a deal to sign left-back Calum Scanlon, 15, of Birmingham City, who confirmed his move to Anfield on Instagram.
“Happy to sign with Liverpool FC,” he wrote. “A big thank you to Birmingham City and everyone who has helped me progress to this point, but from today I am starting a new chapter. The hard work continues, let’s go! ”
