Manchester United winger Kirsty Hanson has signed a new long-term contract with leaders of the Women’s Super League which promises to keep her at the club until 2024, with the possibility of extending the deal further until summer 2025.

Hanson, 20, was part of the original United squad when the team was launched in 2018 and has established itself as a key player in climbing to the top of the WSL rankings.

Like teammates Katie Zelem and Ella Toone, Hanson first joined United at academy level, but had to leave the club as a teenager as there was no senior team to progress to.

Now 22, she has played 57 times for United so far, with only Millier Turner and the aforementioned Zelem and Toone making more appearances in the club’s short history.

“This club means so much to me,” Hanson told ManUtd.com. “I grew up as a United fan, played in the girls’ academy and am now part of the senior squad competing in one of the most competitive leagues in women’s football, which is a dream come true.

“It makes me proud to see how we have evolved over the last few years and I am very happy to sign a new contract. I feel like I’m improving as a player every day and it depends on the environment here, ”she added.

“As players we are constantly pushing each other and Casey [Stoney] and the staff gave me the confidence and the conviction to express myself in the field. I am really excited to continue my journey here and know that we can achieve great things in the future.

United boss Stoney called Hanson a “fantastic player and character”, pointing to her “incredible” work ethic and also calling her a passionate “student of the game”.
