Kieran Tripper’s 10-week ban suspended as Atletico Madrid appeal penalty
Kieran Trippier’s 10-week ban for breaking the betting rules has been temporarily put on hold, pending an appeal, which means he can immediately return to action for Atletico Madrid.
The 30-year-old received the initial ban for leaking inside information about his transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to los Rojiblancos in the summer of 2019, after the defender insisted he had never placed any bet neither benefited financially from the benefits of others.
And Rob harris reports that Trippier’s punishment was stayed on appeal due to the overall extension of the ban, allowing him to return to training and competing for Diego Simeone’s side.
The club received the news from FIFA on Saturday, which confirmed in a statement that it had “approved the suspension of the extended suspension” until the outcome of the appeal was heard.
“The FIFA Appeal Committee has approved the postponement of the extension of the suspension against Kieran Trippier until the proceedings are completed before the FIFA Appeal Committee.”
Simeone had previously described his defender’s ban as “completely unfair”, and he’s not the only man from Atleti discussing it.
Club CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín also spoke out on the ban, questioning the “integrity and ethics” of the English FA, due to the parameters of the sanction. The 10-week ban would see Trippier miss 13 potential matches for the Colchoneros, but he would return just in time for international service with England.
“Personally, I think it’s a disproportionate suspension for the player and totally unfair for Atlético,” he explained.
“How is it possible that the party most affected by this is Atlético, who played no role in the process? If the player has committed an offense which has no effect on the competition, how is Atlético the one to be punished?
“The fact that the FA punished the player by preventing him from playing against Chelsea, and that the ban ends just when the England national team are due to play a competitive game, makes you think of all kinds about integrity. the competition and ethics of a football association with a long history.
