Jurgen Klopp provides update on Joel Matip’s injury

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Joel Matip may not be back in time for Liverpool’s crucial game with Manchester United on Sunday, which means the Reds could find themselves without a center-back in shape for the Premier League clash.

The champions’ crisis at center-back has been well documented this season, with Klopp forced to turn to a number of young players in the absence of a top pair Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez – both put out ‘gap with long-term injuries. .

Matip has been called up in times of need from Liverpool as Klopp looks to add experience to his bottom line, but he has also suffered plenty of blows this season which saw him absent from the starting XI.

The 29-year-old was forced out of the middle of the second half against West Brom after suffering a groin injury, and Klopp has confirmed he will definitely miss Friday’s FA Cup game with Aston Villa – if that were to go ahead – and that’s also a doubt for Liverpool’s clash with United.

“Yeah, we’ll try to work on that obviously,” Klopp told reporters, via the club’s official website. “Until the United game we still have about nine days, so we’re trying.

“He’s going in the right direction but if it will be United or a few days later, I don’t know. After the United game we will play again every three days, so I think that’s pretty much sure, but for the United game we will see.

If the former Cameroon international fails to recover in time for the game with United, Klopp will have a huge decision to make in the middle of defense.

Fabinho has covered center-back brilliantly this season, although the experience of pairing Jordan Henderson alongside the Brazilian in the loss to Southampton has clearly backfired.

St Mary’s loss has seen the tenth different combination in central defense for the Champions this season, and Klopp may well be forced to call on another of his youngsters to step up in what is arguably the club’s biggest game in the season.
