Jose Mourinho has said he can’t give Gareth Bale the series of games the loan star needs to get up to speed for Tottenham.
The Welsh international returned to north London this summer on loan from Real Madrid with great fanfare, but only managed two Premier League starts all season, with Steven Bergwijn often being the man of choice to feature on the right of the attack.
Bale has returned a goal in every competition Tottenham have participated in so far this season, but his performances, alongside Tottenham’s other attacking players except Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, have been largely disappointing .
Speaking ahead of Tottenham’s Premier League derby in London with Chelsea on Thursday, Mourinho mentioned Spurs’ 1-0 loss to Brighton, during and after which Bale received a lot of criticism with Kane injured and Son isolated up front .
When asked if he could offer Bale a series of matches, the former Chelsea manager replied: “No, I can’t.
“Top-level football is very difficult to do [give a run of games], especially in a competition like the Premier League where the level is so high that it is very difficult to do so.
“In my opinion, this is the team that did not have a good performance [against Brighton]. It wasn’t Gareth individually, it was the team. “
Mourinho has also touched on Dele Alli, who he believes could be reintroduced to the squad after his failed transfer to Paris Saint-Germain and his abilities as a leader.
He added: “He has the potential to be a very important player for us, yes. Leader, leadership, leadership in the field, leadership in the locker room, that’s another story. On the pitch he can be very important for the team. , Yes.
“The good Dele Alli can be very important for Tottenham, 100%.”
