Idrissa Gueye rejects loan transfer to Newcastle United
Newcastle have failed in their attempt to sign Idrissa Gueye on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, despite initial talks.
Gueye has fallen out of favor in Paris in recent months and is free to leave the club as a result. Newcastle are looking for a midfielder but have yet to use the January transfer window to strengthen their squad and are running out of time.
L’Equipe initially reported that Newcastle had contacted about a loan for the 31-year-old, but the Daily Mail has since confirmed that Gueye has turned down the possibility of returning to the Premier League with Steve Bruce.
The midfielder was signed by then PSG manager Thomas Tuchel for £ 29million in the summer of 2019 and has made 16 appearances this season, but has played in limited capacity, no ‘having only completed one full game since October.
Gueye is now struggling to find a regular place in the squad under the new leadership of Mauricio Pochettino, with a system change taking him out of camp. Pochettino has been in pursuit of Dele Alli since taking the job at PSG with the England midfielder out of favor at Tottenham.
However, PSG’s lawsuit against Alli has since failed and is now expected to stay in North London beyond the deadline, which could affect any move by Gueye. Newcastle have also been linked with a loan for Leicester’s Hamza Choudhury, but any deal could depend on whether the Foxes get an attacking midfielder before the deadline.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles is also named as a potential target for the Magpies. The versatile midfielder is set to leave on loan before the transfer window closes and Newcastle have been in touch on loan, as have Leicester and Southampton.
