The Scotland international scored his first goal of the season in Saturday’s 4-0 win at West Brom

Mikel Arteta backed Kieran Tierney to eventually become Arsenal captain.

The Scotland international has been a revelation in north London since leaving Celtic in 2019 and again impressed on Saturday in a 4-0 win at West Brom.

Tierney opened the scoring for the Hawthorns with a magnificent individual goal and has been a model of consistency this season as others have struggled around him.

Many believe he is the perfect candidate to one day take the arsenal at Arsenal and Arteta agrees he has all the attributes to become a skipper.

“I think he can be Arsenal captain because he has the respect and admiration of every staff member and every player,” said the Gunners boss. “It’s just the way it is. He does it in a natural way.

“He’s also a very shy boy, but he represents us all in the club; all the values that we want to instill and which are in the DNA of this club.

Tierney is a calm character off the pitch and has admitted he initially struggled to adjust to life in London after leaving the childhood club Celtic.

But on the pitch he is as vocal as they come and has certainly set an example this season with his performances as he continues to impress.

“From the moment I joined the club I have seen a player with enormous talent with the perfect attitude and commitment,” said Arteta.

“It’s a joy to work with him and I’m so happy for him for the way he scored [against West Brom] and everything he did to be better every day towards the team, towards the club.

“He had some problems adjusting. We tried to help him. It was a challenge for him to leave his home as we all tried to help him.

Arteta added, “He’s shy and so humble. He came here and it took him a long time. He had a very serious injury and was away from home, but he is a natural leader.

“You see how he behaves on the pitch and when he speaks he says the right thing. And he’s exactly what we’re looking for and I’m so happy to have him on the team.

“He can still improve but he’s a real threat in attack and really strong in defense.”
