FPL Captain’s Choice – Gameweek 23

Fantasy Football Gameweek 22 ended * checks scores * on Thursday, and Gameweek 23 begins * checks scores again * on Saturday – so just a standard Fantasy Premier League 2020/21 week, eh?

While you may still be digesting the news that Mohamed Salah is no longer a home banker captain against teams battling relegation, it’s time to put that disappointment behind you, dust yourself off and get ready to leave.

Fortunately, the stress and constraints of choosing the right captain are no longer a burden you have to shoulder on your own, because 90 mins is here to provide you with five great picks for this week – but don’t complain if everything goes wrong, get it?

Crystal Palace star Ebere Eze is said to be a left-field call to be your FPL captain this week, but the 22-year-old has become the Eagles’ star man and has scored 18 points in the last two games .

This weekend, Palace face a Leeds side who have the second-worst defensive record in the entire Premier League. Leeds haven’t had a clean sheet since December and although Palace don’t win at Elland Road there are goals to be scored. There is a good chance that Eze will participate.

It all depends on how you expect Southampton to respond after being completely beaten 9-0 midweek. But Callum Wilson, who is the fourth best-scoring FPL forward this season, could be back in Newcastle’s goals against the Saints.

Wilson has had direct goal-scoring involvement in his last three Premier League appearances, although Newcastle have lost two of those games and are in good shape after overcoming a bad patch.

Ilkay Guendogan

Ilkay Gundogan has been pulling the string for Manchester City lately in his best form since joining the club from Borussia Dortmund in 2016.

The German has managed a goal or assist in seven of City’s last nine Premier League games and they now face a Liverpool side in defensive disarray. The Reds will have a patched defense with midfielders and youngsters or at least launch one of the new signings at the deep end.

Son Heung-min

Son Heung-min is the second-best performing midfielder in the FPL this season and, with Harry Kane not set to return this weekend, he is Tottenham’s main source of goals and creativity.

The Spurs haven’t been in the best shape, but on Sunday they host a West Brom side who are 10 points behind safety and conceded two or more goals in Seven back-to-back Premier League games, as well as having fled 14 more goals than the next worst defense in the division.

Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United returned to victory in a Premier League record tying victory over Southampton, with Bruno Fernandes scoring 17 FPL points to tie his best score of the season so far.

United’s confidence should be bolstered by the 9-0 rout after a few lackluster games before that, even as they face a menacing side from Everton. Fernandes also has a good record against the Toffees as he got 17 points when he faced them in Week 8.
