FIFA has confirmed the timeline for the venues selection process for the 2026 World Cup, which is expected to be hosted by the United States, as well as neighboring countries Canada and Mexico.

The famous tournament will undergo a redesign for this edition, increasing the number of competitors in the cup from 32 to 48, which will see the first two teams qualify from 16 groups of three.

And it will be the United States that mostly host this controversial new format, while Canada and Mexico entertain 10 games each. FIFA announced on Wednesday afternoon that it is set to reveal the venues for the competition as it has now confirmed the timeline for the stadium selection process.

The governing body has provided information to the 23 host cities in the three countries regarding the timeline and deadlines to be met in 2021, while taking into account the possibility of delays and setbacks due to coronavirus restrictions.

FIFA will organize individual meetings among themselves, the host associations and the stadiums selected to discuss the infrastructural aspects, which will take place from February 2021.

Then April 2021, FIFA and the host associations will launch targeted virtual chats with each candidate host city. “

The governing body then aims to start site visits at the host stages of July 2021, but again, it’s coronavirus pending. These visits will only take place if the host country authorizes FIFA to do so in accordance with the directives of the health authorities.

If all of this goes according to plan, FIFA hopes named the host cities in the last quarter 2021.
