Facundo Pellistri set to seal Manchester United’s La Liga loan
Manchester United teenager Facundo Pellistri is expected to join Deportivo Alaves in La Liga before the January transfer window closes early next week.
Pellistri arrived at United from Uruguayan giant Peñarol in October for around £ 8million. The club were determined to give him time to settle in and adapt and he has so far only played for the Under-23 team, despite regular training with the first team.
When a January loan became a likely possibility, it was noted that while Pellistri is not considered ready to play in United’s first team, there is a feeling that he has already passed the level of under 23. So it was important to find him a club where he could develop to a higher level.
United are believed to have ruled out the idea of a club in the league due to the physical nature of the league and Spain has always been touted as a likely destination due to the language.
Celta Vigo were one of the clubs being talked about, but reporter Jonathan Shrager reported that a move to Alaves is expected to be completed by the end of Friday.
Currently 18th in La Liga, the Basque side of Alaves have struggled to score goals this season, scoring just 18 in 20 games, as they have lost their last four games in a row. Their current top scorers, with four apiece, are former Premier League duo Joselu and Lucas Perez.
“We want him to have regular football, of course, at a higher level [than the reserves]United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said of Pellistri’s immediate future.
Pellistri, who turned 19 in December, has been on the bench for United’s first team twice this season, both times during the Champions League group stage.
He has three goals and one assist in eight U23 appearances in Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy.
Fans were hopeful that the FA Cup third round draw against Watford could have presented an opportunity for his United debut. But Pellistri tested positive for coronavirus while preparing for the game and was forced to self-isolate.
