Facundo Pellistri set to join Alaves on loan from Man Utd

Manchester United winger Facundo Pellistri is expected to fly to Spain in the coming days to seal a loan transfer to Alaves, while teammate Marcos Rojo finalizes a move to Argentina.

Penarol’s £ 10million signing over the summer, Pellistri is yet to make his United debut. He was an unused replacement for two Champions League games, but actually spent most of his time with the reservists.

United want the 19-year-old to play senior football again, but don’t think he’s ready for a place at Old Trafford just yet, and the arrival of 18-year-old Amad Diallo, who has scored a doubled and a penalty from Panenka. on his debut for the Under 23, Atalanta presented another hurdle for Pellistri.

Discussions have taken place with Belgian club Brugge, but as Goal noted, it was Alaves who won the race for the Uruguayan signing. Pellistri has already spoken to Alaves officials and is now set to fly to Spain on Sunday to put pen to paper on a six-month loan.

It is understood that Pellistri pushed United to accept Alaves’ proposal as he always dreamed of playing in La Liga and was captivated by manager Abelardo’s plan for the winger. He didn’t choose an easy road, however, as Alaves currently sit 18th in La Liga, one point down from safety. They have lost ten games, a league-high, while their 18 goals scored are tied for the fourth-worst record in the division.

Pellistri will join a struggling frontline that includes former Premier League talents Lucas Perez, Joselu and Jota, and the hope is he can inspire Abelardo’s side to safety.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has often praised Pellistri, who was a regular part of the first-team training squad at Carrington, and it was quickly decided the teenager was already too good for reserve football.

However, with Diallo being nominated for a place in the squad in the near future, the decision has been made for Pellistri to go on loan and hopefully compete for a place in the senior squad upon his return to Old Trafford. .

As for Rojo, 30, he has made a deal with United to end his contract – through Sky Sports – and will become a free agent in early February. He is likely to return home to Argentina, with Solskjaer confirming in his press conference ahead of United’s game with Arsenal that there is only “a little paperwork left to do”.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Estudiantes and hasn’t played for United at all in 2020/21.
