Everything you need to know about the Pele Cup

Sure, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi may have broken a series of records set by the legendary Pele in recent weeks, but have they had a tournament named after them on the famous Fortnite video game?

No no no. So who’s laughing now?

Pele has teamed up with Fortnite and Epic Games to spread the word about the great man’s career, so today’s young people know how good he was – what he’ll likely tell you, is better than Messi and Ronaldo.

Either way, this new tournament is about to start soon, and with a whole bunch of registered football clubs, it promises to be a cracking event. But what exactly do you need to know about the Pele Cup?

As mentioned, the all-new game mode pays homage to Pelé and his World Cup winning heroes. It will be a limited-time game mode, allowing players to go from the usual rigors of winning Battle Royale matches to participating in football-themed events.

Players will take part in the Pele Cup to beat their rivals and win a number of prizes including ‘skins’ from their favorite football teams, 23 of which have signed up to be part of the fun. Each player can participate in a maximum of 10 matches in a three hour session, and will earn a leaderboard based on the points scored during the competition. The tournament starts on January 20.

The Pele Cup has attracted some of the biggest names in Europe, with some of the world’s most famous clubs having agreed to a collaboration with Epic and Fortnite. This means your character could wear the band from the British sides Manchester city, Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Ham United, Celtic or Rangers.

Four of the Italian powers also entered the competition, with Juventus, Milan, Inter and AS Roma all join the competition, while the German clubs VfL Wolfsburg, Borussia Monchengladbach and FC Schalke are also on the list.

Seville are the only representatives of Spain, while Sporting FC fly the flag of Portugal. Given that the Pelé Cup centers around the legend himself, it’s no shock that Santos FC and CE Bahia have also agreed to partner with Epic.

And of course, the United States of America is also strongly represented, with Seattle Sounders FC, Atlanta united and Los Angeles FC all involved. Australian sides Melbourne city fc, Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers also accepted the collaboration, while the Japanese outfit Cerezo Osaka are the latest addition.

To pay even more homage to Great Pelé, players can get the famous Attacker’s Air Punch Celebration. There are two ways they can do this: the Air Punch Emote can be purchased from the Fortnite Item Shop starting January 23, or you can earn the Air Punch by ranking in the Pele Cup on January 20.

When it comes to the Pelé Cup prizes, there are many different rewards for players. Players can earn new kits from selected teams or earn the ‘Pele’s Air Punch’ emote, so you have the chance to celebrate victory like it did at the World Cup.

The tournament will also be split into regional winners, allowing those who place first in their region to receive a signed Santos jersey, while the top 3,500 players from each region will receive the air punch and some character outfits.
