“Don’t Dull Mokhtar Dahari’s Memory” – Selangor FC fans issue recall in response to new retro-inspired kit
Selangor’s latest home kit pays homage to the country and the club’s best player of all time.
Selangor FC became the first club in the Malaysian league to launch their kit for the 2021 season, when they announced their home kit for the upcoming season on Monday evening.
The Red Giants’ latest home jersey is based on their iconic 1986 Malaysian Cup final jersey, which is still reproduced and worn by fans in recent years.
While the match ended in a 6-1 win for Selangor over Johor and their 27th Malaysian Cup title, perhaps more historic was the fact that it was also the last game under a Red Giants jersey for Selangor and Malaysian legend, the late Mokhtar. Dahari.
Mokhtar had appeared for Selangor a total of 375 times, scoring a total of 177 official goals. Barely five years after retiring from Selangor, the striker is said to die at the age of just 37 from motor neuron disease.
The kit retains the red, green and yellow base of the original band, with green being the official color of the Crown Prince of the state of Selangor). More interestingly, even the positions of the club crest and kitmaker emblem have been retained. The Selangor crest sits to the right of the chest while Joma’s logo crosses it, facing how they’ve been placed in recent years.

However, several minor changes were also made. The collar is smaller, while a red and yellow trim has been introduced where the collar meets the chest. The yellow part of the kit now features the filigree design of the Spanish cherry, the official flower of the state of Selangor.
But the legend that is remembered through this kit, Mokhtar is immortalized on the back just below the collar; a rubber imprint of his facial silhouette and hair.
However, the tribute doesn’t end with the jersey. Alongside current and former Selangor players, the band’s promotional material also includes one of Mokhtar’s sons, Reza Mokhtar, who briefly remembers his father in a promotional video.
The new home kit can be purchased from the club’s website, Player’s Edition for RM 109. The kit fan number won’t be released until after Chinese New Year, according to the club, and club team card holders will receive a 10% discount on their purchase.
While their fans responded positively to the new band, one group also sent a reminder to the club’s board in response. On their social networks, their ultras, Ultrasel reminded the club to use its history to build a more prosperous future and avoid tarnishing Mokhtar’s memory by not playing well in the coming season.
“History must be remembered in order to motivate us to create future glory. So we ask: what is the vision, mission and direction of the club board / property for the near and far future, after the privatization initiative?
“The board, players and coaches should remember that when they put on the Mokhtar and 1986 inspired kit, they now have a heavy responsibility not to sully the honor of the shirt. Now you have to make sure that your performance surpasses and surpasses our past glories.
“What good is it to remember past successes when the path to the future is dark and lit only by the lights we have passed? We must build a more prosperous future, Forza Grande Selangor! ”
