Chelsea join Manchester City in pursuit of Erling Haaland

Chelsea are set to join Manchester City in pursuit of Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland in 2020/21, although he has already spent around £ 120million on Timo Werner and Kai Havertz alone in recent months – and 100 million extra pounds for other players.

City are on the hunt for a new forward as they see a future beyond an aging Sergio Aguero, with few club members having enough confidence in Gabriel Jesus to step into the Argentinian’s shoes.

Haaland is one of Europe’s top three strikers who many expect to be available in 2021, alongside Kylian Mbappe and Inter star Lautaro Martinez. But the likelihood seems that Mbappe will travel to Real Madrid if he is away, while Martinez has expressed interest in joining Barcelona.

City have pre-existing ties to Haaland as his father, Alf-Inge, spent three years with the club. Haaland Jr. was pictured wearing a City shirt as a child, even after his father retired.

Sources confirmed to 90 mins this city considers itself favorite to sign Haaland. However, Chelsea have also let the players’ camp know that they are very interested.

Chelsea’s position actually surprised many, as it was previously assumed that the Blues would not return to the transfer market for another striker, having already signed both Werner and Havertz and generally spent a lot on new players. .

In public, Haaland has promised his immediate future in Dortmund, but 90 mins understands that the 20-year-old Norwegian has yet to make his decision and could still decide to leave Dortmund this summer. Those who track him believe he will be on the move in 2021.

Dortmund are reportedly asking for well over £ 100million to sell at the end of the season. There have long been rumors of a release clause in the region of £ 68million that would become active in 2022. Dortmund, however, is adamant there are no such clauses in its deal that would allow it to leave this year.

The reasons why Haaland is so coveted are obvious. He was only 21 in July, but has already scored over 82 career goals at senior club level since 2017. No less than 44 of them came in a phenomenal breakthrough season in 2019 / 20, with 17 others already in 2020/21.
