Chelsea add Niklas Sule to center-back target list

Chelsea are hoping to sign a new center-back this summer and have asked scouts to keep a close eye on Bayern Munich’s Niklas Sule.

Finding an experienced young center-back has been on Chelsea’s to-do list since the current transfer window closed, with the Blues eager to find someone to anchor their defense for the foreseeable future.

In Thomas Tuchel’s first two games at Chelsea, he used three full backs full of aging players. Thiago Silva is 36, while Cesar Azpilicueta is 31 and Antonio Rudiger is the youngest of the trio at 27, so plans are naturally being made for the future.

RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano is on Chelsea’s radar and, according to Sport Bild, Tuchel wants the club to consider a move for Sule, who only has 18 months left on his contract at the Allianz Arena.

Sule has lost his place in Bayern’s starting lineup this season, starting just eight of the team’s 19 Bundesliga games, and Bayern fear this will leave him hesitant to sign a new deal. If he does not extend, Sule is expected to be sold this summer for around £ 27million, similar to the deal which brought Thiago to Liverpool.

“It is of course also good for us when other clubs are interested in our players,” said Bayern boss Hansi Flick (via Metro), when asked about the rumor. “At the moment the defense is doing very well and Niklas is definitely an option, both in central defense and as a full-back.

“Niklas is a very fast player, very good on the ball, relaxed and able to impact the game from behind. His physical qualities are an absolute strength. That’s why I’m happy he’s on my team. .

“He has a contract with us until 2022. We will see how the situation evolves, how and where he sees his future.”

Fellow Bayern compatriot David Alaba is also believed to be on Chelsea’s radar, with the Blues willing to ignore their plan to sign a young defender if it means someone of Austrian pedigree is transferred for free.

Alaba has only six months left on his contract and is set to leave widely this summer, with Real Madrid leading the race for his signing.
