The Bengaluru FC boss affirmed the importance of not conceding goals that amplify a team’s chances of winning a tie …
Udanta Singh struggled to save time in the seventh edition of the Indian Super League (ISL). The right winger scored a goal in 254 minutes and only got the start in three outings.
Although he missed the last game against Jamshedpur FC due to a blow, he was unable to respond or come close to his best form of the 2018-19 season when Bengaluru FC won his first ISL title. Udanta has played an important role in this campaign, scoring five important goals and starting in 19 matches.
Bengaluru FC coach Carles Cuadrat has supported the Manipuri player to succeed in the coming games but mentioned he has a lot of decision-making work to do.
“He wasn’t in the last game because he had a muscle problem. He’s one of my favorite players and he knows he needs to improve in decision making. He has my support and he will be available in the next match, ”Cuadrat said.
Bengaluru FC have had a week’s break since their last loss to Jamshedpur FC and Cuadrat said it helped them spend more time with the players to reignite their ‘momentum’. He also spoke about the need to get goals from different players rather than just focusing on a few.
“We still had time this week and we will try to fight for three points again. In the last two games the team were trying to create scoring chances but unfortunately we lost some momentum. The good thing is we got goals from other players. It means that the team works to get goals from different players and is not dependent on one player in particular, ”he said.
Bengaluru FC, like most ISL teams, have not been at their best this season. They have scored 11 goals in eight games and are fifth on the table. When you compare their goalscoring statistics with those of ATK Mohun Bagan, who are leaders in the league, the Kolkata club have 10 goals in nine games.
However, it is their defense that has leaked this season as they have allowed nine goals as the top two teams in the league have conceded a third of the same.
“It’s not about being disappointed. When you score you are closer to scoring again because you are forcing the other team out. If you see the last game, we were really creating a lot of chances in the other game and there was room for our players.
“We also have to do better not to concede because you lost two games 1-0. When you concede, you can lose. The guys understand that and work in a very positive way, ”he explained.
The Spanish coach has stressed the importance of scoring the first goal this season and reiterated that the strength of his team lies in their defensive structure.
“We see that in any league. For example, the Chelsea match against Man City, it was very even. After they (Man City) got the first goal, things were happening. So we try to create those kinds of chances and prevent the other team from making a comeback. We are a measured team with a good defensive structure, ”he noted.
Sergio Lobera hasn’t had a great record against Bengaluru FC since joining FC Goa. In fact, in seven games over three seasons, Goa de Lobera has only been able to secure one victory – around the time Gurpreet Singh Sandhu was sent off.
“We played against each other a lot of the time. In Mumbai City he created the same kind of football and he brought players from Goa to Mumbai. They are in a good dynamic but we all have a plan and I’m sure we’re going to put on a good show like we’ve done so far, ”he promised.
