Big clubs take note – Douglas Luiz is one of the best midfielders
As Aston Villa continues to impress as the season progresses, we see that there is much more to Dean Smith’s squad than just Jack Grealish.
On offense, Ollie Watkins and Ross Barkley are having excellent seasons, while goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is worth the money spent to bring him back from Arsenal. Matty Cash has been a revelation at right-back and Ezri Konsa is having a season that has him flying under the radar for a potential place in England’s Euro 2020 squad.
But it’s Douglas Luiz’s performance as a midfielder that deserves the most praise.
The Brazilian has been excellent throughout the 2020/21 season, using his tough tackle and fantastic reading of the game to help keep Smith’s side compact and defensively strong. Additionally, his ability on the ball and in tight areas has helped Villa implement his style of play no matter who the opponent is, making him a threat against any team they play against.
Luiz is comfortable playing one and two touch football and is able to get out of trouble, while also having the ability to blast players with the ball. At 22, he tends to keep it simple in the center of the park and it is his quality in this area that has seen him enter the senior setup in Brazil.
With the pool of top defensive midfielders across Europe fairly shallow, Luiz’s level of performance this season should definitely grab the attention of the top teams.
It’s easy to forget that the reason he got the chance to shine for Villa was because he couldn’t get a work permit for Manchester City, who were so confident in their abilities that they insisted to insert a buyout clause in the agreement that led him to Villa Park. The £ 15million fee was enough to ensure he got a work permit and he’s been shining ever since.
90 mins exclusively revealed in November that City plan to use their buyout option on the midfielder in 2021, but the likelihood that they are the only interested party is low.
Manchester United are expected to be looking for a holding midfielder this summer, while Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham could do worse than make a move. City hold the advantage with their buyout clause standing at around £ 25million, but other clubs should be prepared to pay double to take it.
Despite his young age, Luiz has a maturity in his game that shows he will be a top footballer for years to come. A step forward towards the Champions League is needed and all parties involved will know that the likelihood of that happening at Villa Park is slim to zero.
It’s not just the Premier League where his skills would be appreciated. With his physically imposing style complementing his supreme technical qualities, he could boost any midfielder in Europe. Real Madrid lack funds but must look to improve their aging midfielder, while Barcelona could use any sort of improvement on a currently poor team.
These clubs aren’t just names pulled out of a hat for Luiz, they’re where he’s meant to end. He is so good.
Aston Villa’s success this season is largely due to having one of the best goalkeepers in the league, one of the most successful center-backs in the league, arguably the best striker in the league. league this season but also the best defensive midfielder in the league this season.
If the clubs at the top of the division want to improve, they should all target the Villa team for reinforcements and Luiz should be at the top of their list.
