Defending champions Bayern Munich were sent off from DfB-Pokal in the second round as second-tier Holstein Kiel booked their place in the last 16 with a spectacular victory on penalties.
Bayern entered the game in about as unconvincing form as you’ll likely never see. They recently lost their second Bundesliga game of the season and conceded the first goal in each of their last nine league games.
In an attempt to rediscover their mojo, Hansi Flick sent in a strong Bayern side that lacked only a handful of regular starters. Robert Lewandowski, David Alaba, Benjamin Pavard remained on the bench, but Bayern still looked more than enough on paper.
They started the game well and took the lead after 14 minutes thanks to Serge Gnabry, but Bayern were caught before half-time. A free-kick from Leroy Sane had Flick’s advantage shortly after the break, but they just couldn’t find that third goal.
Their poor finish allowed center-back Hauke Wahl to shoot an equalizer in the 95th minute, and in the penalty shootout that followed, it was midfielder Marc Roca whose saved effort made it possible at the minnows to eliminate Bayern from the competition in the second round – their first outing since 2000.

After the game, Thomas Muller was embroiled in a thorny confrontation with journalist Valeska Homburg, who laughed at the result as she asked Bayern about the mood in the dressing room.
“What do you think is the mood? You’re laughing here now, ”he says (via AZ).” We are of course pissed off, as you can of course imagine. The mood is not good. “
Muller then took to Instagram to write: “The last minute shock is still fresh. Still, congratulations at this point to Holstein Kiel for his progress, which was a bit lost in all the frustration at the start of the interview.
“Valeska Homburg, the two of us probably could have done a little better – no offense.”
