Barcelona could complete Eric Garcia’s transfer this month
Barcelona could complete the signing of Manchester City defender Eric Garcia before the January transfer window ends due to the Premier League side’s declining valuation.
It has long been debated when rather than if Garcia would return to his former club, having traded La Masia for the Etihad Campus at 16 in 2017.
Now 20, he is part of City’s first team but has refused to sign a new contract and will be leaving Manchester somehow by the end of the season at the latest.
City demands of up to € 20million last summer ruled Barca out of a deal amid severe financial tensions at Camp Nou. But the Premier League side are well aware they stand to lose Garcia on a free transfer unless they are willing to agree to a more affordable deal this month.
Barcelona are already allowed to officially negotiate and agree a contract with Garcia as he entered the last six months of his deal with City. At the very least, the Catalans can get his signature on a pre-contract deal for the summer.
The possibility of a transfer this month will depend on discussions between the clubs.
Mundo Deportivo claim City’s demands have halved since last summer. Instead of asking for a fixed price of € 10million and up to € 10million in add-ons, the Premier League side are said to now value Garcia at € 5million plus € 5million. additional euros, up to 10 million euros in total.
MD also claim that Barca would not even have to pay the initial € 5million and could defer payment until next season, which would significantly increase the club’s accounts due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on income streams.
Although coach Ronald Koeman recently declared his desire to sign a ‘number nine’, another center-back must be a priority for Barca if they can only commit to one signing.
Acting President Carles Tusquets is expected to present the proposal to sign Garcia to the presidential candidates for approval. If Barca wait until after the elections later this month, there may not be enough time left in the window with the upheaval that is about to occur.
