Sergio Aguero is being targeted by some of Barcelona’s presidential candidates in hopes that signing him will be enough to convince Lionel Messi to stay with the club.
Aguero’s contract expires in June and by then he will have spent a decade at the Etihad stadium, having already scored an impressive 256 goals for the club in 379 games.
The Argentine has been scoreless in the Premier League for over a year, largely due to injuries and the impact of Covid-19.
According to Carrusel Deportivo, via Cadena SER, Barca presidential candidate Victor Font is very keen on a move for Aguero in the hopes that it would help refocus Messi, while Joan Laporta would also retain an interest.
A move to the Catalan giants is likely to please Aguero given his inability to regain his place in Man City’s starting XI, and it would see him bond for the first time with his childhood friend Messi at the level of the club.
Messi made it clear his desire to leave Camp Nou last summer and believed there was a clause in his contract that would allow him to walk away for free, but that was not the case and a move would not happen. never materialized.
City are believed to have been the favorites for Messi’s signing this summer, while PSG are the latest team to be touted with a transfer for the Barcelona captain.
Although Aguero is completely out of form and out of shape, he is still held in high regard at City and will remain one of their greatest players of all time.
Since being signed in July 2011, Aguero has helped City win four Premier League titles, five League Cups and one FA Cup, while also being the club’s all-time top scorer.
However, no sign of a new contract is on the horizon.
